Confessions of a Volunteer
Administrative Assistant (Current Employee) – Gateshead, ENG – 16 July 2015
My role within Age UK Gateshead which is to provide administrative assistance in the Information and Advice service, through assisting with the successful delivery and promotion of information and advice support to older people and their families living in the Gateshead borough. My role within the service involves processing and disseminating information to the relevant people through scanning documents and forms (for such benefits as Carers Allowance, Pension Credit and the Disability Living Allowance) and entering the details onto the Charitylog database (a cloud-based CRM charity database that helps monitor service delivery and measures project outcomes). This has been backed up through training in (giving) benefits advice and disability benefits.
The working environment within the Information and Advice (I&A) team at Age UK Gateshead is more or less informal, and we tend to support each other in our work. For example, during my first few weeks at Age UK Gateshead, I needed the help of my fellow workers in order to “learn the ropes” in terms of understanding office procedures, as well as knowing what needed to be done. In time, this has developed into an informal exchange of help, information and knowledge (especially of the benefits system).
But it’s not all work. We often take every opportunity to have some fun – such as having a go at representing the I&A Team in biscuit form!
