Worthwhile career, but no work / life balance
Detective - VICE Squad, Firearms Support, Tutor (Former Employee) – West Yorkshire – 21 December 2017
After joining the police in 2001, It became clear that the police was a worthwhile career to be in for career development.
There were several departments that I worked in throughout my career, all of which led to significant skills being learned.
Each day was very different, which was a bonus, but the work / life balance was horrendous. Towards 2013/2014, when government budget cuts started to kick in, the days were very long, resulting in extended shifts nearly every day.
I always had fantastic team spirit in every department that I worked in, and fully regarded my police career as one of the most rewarding I have ever had, but it is not an easy one to be in especially if you are trying to juggle having a family and children alongside.
Good pay, excellent career development
Very long hours, little work life balance
