Culture of fear and HR who have too much power
Manager (Former Employee) –  Birmingham, West Midlands21 January 2019
I had the misfortune of working here. Seeing the police entry requirement is little more than a few GCSEs it is unbelievable how highly they rate themselves. Departments in awe and dictated to by jumped up management consultants. What a waste of public money keeping these idiots in designer clothes. The worst people were human resources. These very stupid individuals seemed to rule the roost. None of them worth even a third of the large salaries they were being paid. The culture is one of bullying and these over competitive colleagues who would stab you in the back in a blink of an eye to get promotion. They also sqeaked to your line manager to deliberately get you into trouble. I have put this role in this force as one of the worst jobs I had the misfortune to accept.

A very dynamic yet caring place to work
LEARNING DEVELOPMENT MANAGER (Former Employee) –  Edgbaston18 January 2019
With over eight thousand police officers and almost three thousand support staff located at numerous locations throughout the West Midlands, this organisation is highly visable to the communities it serves.

Considerable investment is made in learning and development to ensure police and staff members are highly competent and confident in the role they perform.

The dynamic nature of modern policing ensures WMP is a stimulating place to work. However, this is also a very caring organisation and the health and wellbeing of its workforce is a priority. Flexible working, generous holiday and parental leave makes this an ideal employer for those with children.
Pros
Dynamic nature of work
Cons
Some jods involve a high degree of administration

Ever-changing
Forensic Scene Investigator (Current Employee) –  Birmingham, West Midlands2 January 2019
A typical day at work is never that. Some people will say that no two days are ever the same, but here, no two hours are ever the same. The role is dynamic, with ever changing priorities and as such you need to be a fast learner and a quick thinker.

Management can vary depending on your department, however the organisation is made up of people who have been promoted through the ranks. In the police staff world, this can present some challenges.

The hardest part of the job can be dealing with the publec, especially if they have been a victim of crime, but his can also be the most rewarding, knowing you are there to make a difference to their lives.
Pros
Flexible working
Cons
Long hours, unsociable

Do things that Matter
Intelligence Officer & Supervisor (Current Employee) –  West Bromwich, West Midlands2 November 2018
Time at WMP has been satisfactory. Promises to develop are not followed up on.

New diversity and Inclusion aspect to the force means that if you are looking to develop and enhance future, but are not BME then there is no point in applying.

promotions based on culture & ethnicity and not on job performance.
Pros
Flexi time
Cons
Promotions based on culture, not experience.

Contact Centre Officer (Current Employee) –  City Centre Birmingham18 September 2018
A very friendly place to work and everyone working as a team and helping and supporting each other with advice.
Not every call is the same and can be challenging at times which we all deal with.
Dealing with everyday problems and domestic situations and directing calls to the relevant departments for more help if we cannot deal first hand.
Working along side other agencies and groups.
Pros
Good Salary - sports and social club (trips and discounts)
Cons
Constantly taking calls - very busy environment

Avoid
Police Officer (Former Employee) –  West Midlands30 June 2018
I had the displeasure of working alongside with Police Officers who thought it's okay to poke fun of victims of crime.

Management who gossip behind colleagues backs and also behave in a unacceptable manner.

Witnessed colleagues bully citizens.

Certain colleagues favoured over others. Lazy neighbourhood officers.

Bullies.

Narcissists in a nutshell.

AVOID working with people who get a power trip and think citizens are below them.
Pros
engaging with citizens
Cons
Bullies aka police officers

Custody Officer Assistant (Current Employee) –  Birmingham, West Midlands26 June 2018
A typical day will include taking biometric samples from detainees, liaising with officers and solicitors, along with multi-agency workers such as Health Care Professionals and Immigration Officers. The most difficult part of the job is dealing with high risk detainees.

Detective Constable (Current Employee) –  Sandwell, West Midlands11 February 2018
Even though the West Midlands Police have gone through major changes the Staff still produce and remain professional.
A typical day at work will start with a briefing to cover the overnight crime and to fast track enquiries to preserve evidence and to forward the investigations in a managed approach.

Civil Servant. Front line staff-enquiry officer (Former Employee) –  Main station Sutton Coldfield and any substations30 November 2017
Some days are slow, others are extremely fast going. You can be dealing with three people at a time as well as dealing with queries from officers and other members of staff. Hardest part was keeping cool when a criminal is ranting and raving at you because he was at the police station having to sign on bail and it wasn’t his fault, it was everyone else’s. Enjoyable part _ helping someone trace their lost phone/pet......the elderly. The elderly do not want to bother the police as they think they have enough to do, but what is trivial to them was big for us and it was a pleasure to deal with them and see them go away happy and smiling
