MSc Graduate from the University of Southampton (Former Employee) –  Southampton8 July 2018
A very well run course, heavily technical yet still fun. The professors were second to none and provided excellent lectures, I felt ahead of the curve at graduation.

Student caller (Former Employee) –  Southampton15 June 2018
I would definitely recommend becoming a student caller to anyone studying at university and looking for a part time job. You are met with your fair share of confrontation working in a call centre, however, earning money for a great cause makes it worth it- most of the time!

Programme Manager (Former Employee) –  Business School4 May 2018
AS you'd expect of public sector, a lot of bureaucracy and procedures and took ages to get decisions made. But good work-life balance and nice work colleagues.

A crumbling workplace
Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Current Employee) –  Southampton8 March 2018
The university used to be a present and engaging environment. With the new vice chancelor and the pensions row this has disappeared. A third of the work force are on fixed term contracts, often in niche areas requiring dramatic relocation upon contract completion. There is fear that highly educated personnel will be made redundant.
Pros
A job role you love
Cons
No job security, dwindling pension, and poor pay compared to industry

Perfect place to earn a PhD
PhD Student (Former Employee) –  Southampton22 February 2018
The support available to PhD students across the University can vary quite dramatically, however in the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment the staff are extremely passionate about their research and their research students. They go above and beyond to help with any and all matters. The facilities are state of the art, with some very unique test machines that allow for research opportunities not possible at other universities.

The work/life balance is perfect, with an expectation of time self-management from supervisors. This allows you to schedule your research to best suit you, and also develops your own management skills so that you are able to meet all deadlines and work within the department to share equipment and facilities. There are plenty of opportunities to extend beyond your research, and you are encouraged to interact with the wider university in a social and professional setting.
Pros
Excellent support from line managers, wonderful opportunities beyond your research
Cons
Not unique to Southampton, but underfunding of PhDs in the UK as a whole is an issue

Organisation has over-inflated sense of self-importance
MARKET INTELLIGENCE ANALYST (Former Employee) –  Southampton18 September 2017
Colleagues are smart and hard-working, but strong divide between academic and professional services staff, and poor inter-departmental collaboration results in staff frustration and poor student experience.
