Student caller (Former Employee) – Southampton – 15 June 2018
I would definitely recommend becoming a student caller to anyone studying at university and looking for a part time job. You are met with your fair share of confrontation working in a call centre, however, earning money for a great cause makes it worth it- most of the time!
Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Current Employee) – Southampton – 8 March 2018
The university used to be a present and engaging environment. With the new vice chancelor and the pensions row this has disappeared. A third of the work force are on fixed term contracts, often in niche areas requiring dramatic relocation upon contract completion. There is fear that highly educated personnel will be made redundant.
A job role you love
No job security, dwindling pension, and poor pay compared to industry
PhD Student (Former Employee) – Southampton – 22 February 2018
The support available to PhD students across the University can vary quite dramatically, however in the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment the staff are extremely passionate about their research and their research students. They go above and beyond to help with any and all matters. The facilities are state of the art, with some very unique test machines that allow for research opportunities not possible at other universities.
The work/life balance is perfect, with an expectation of time self-management from supervisors. This allows you to schedule your research to best suit you, and also develops your own management skills so that you are able to meet all deadlines and work within the department to share equipment and facilities. There are plenty of opportunities to extend beyond your research, and you are encouraged to interact with the wider university in a social and professional setting.
Excellent support from line managers, wonderful opportunities beyond your research
Not unique to Southampton, but underfunding of PhDs in the UK as a whole is an issue
I studied Biomedical Sciences (3 years) course in this university I can say that, staff is very professional in their area. In addition, I also worked as a summer placement student in microbiology research labs which are highly advanced and have a big role in my current technical skills.
Exhibition Designer (Former Employee) – Southampton – 16 October 2017
Designed unique print materials, including advertisements, brochures and logo designs. Collaborated with a team of designers to offer improvements and direction on others' projects. Contributed ideas during strategic and conceptual brainstorming sessions. Prepared layouts and drawings in compliance with established templates and design standards. Adhered to all corporate brand guidelines when preparing graphic materials. Developed creative graphics that simplified complex messages.
Colleagues are smart and hard-working, but strong divide between academic and professional services staff, and poor inter-departmental collaboration results in staff frustration and poor student experience.
University Ambassador (Former Employee) – Southampton – 4 August 2017
Student Ambassadors are given free lunch, and compensation for any travel costs they may incur. The staff are all students, and friendly and welcoming. Management are friendly and helpful with any problems people may have.
