Bad management
Student (Current Employee) –  Kedleston, Derbyshire30 April 2019
University of Derby is poorly managed. At the beginning of the course I sent and email to the admission team and had a reply after over three weeks. Library has not as many resources as you would expect; the Kedleston Road campus has less than 50 laptop available for hire and during deadline time is impossible to find an available one. Library opening hours are absurd.. 5pm on a Sunday. Shouldn’t it be opened later as more students are off work and willing to work on their deadlines? Also recently there was an event on and the capus was full of families and children. Managers decide to organise an escape room for children in the quiet area. Students working on their deadlines while screaming children were running around. Nottingham Trent has a very different atmosphere, step your game up University of Derby! Start thinking about the students!
Pros
Good lecturers
Cons
Everything is badly managed.

This university is growing steadily and quickly gaining a reputation as a fine institution of learning. Graduates from this university seem to easily find work and further study opportunities

Productive and fun workplace. No day is the same and things can change from one minute to the next. Not much chance for progression however which is a downside

Productive and Fun
Tutor (Part-time) (Current Employee) –  Buxton, Derbyshire27 November 2018
Engaging with students in a friendly and professional manner -as an equal, whilst implementing the following components to contribute to high quality teaching and learning outcomes.

Pedagogical: Content knowledge and strong impact on student outcome. Having a deep understanding of materials used and knowledge about the subject taught.

Class preparation: Understanding the types of learner’s students are and the ways in which they think about the content (be able to evaluate the thinking behind students own methods and identifying common misconceptions.

Quality of Instruction: Elements such as effective questioning and use of assessment. Reviewing previous learning, providing model responses for students and allowing adequate time for practice to embed skills securely and progressively.

Classroom Climate: Covering quality of interactions between myself and students, and teacher expectations. Attributing student success to effort rather than ability only.

Classroom Management: Use to ensure efficient lesson time, to coordinate classroom resources and space.

Teacher beliefs: Why we may adopt particular practices, and the purposes they aim to achieve their theories about what learning is and how it happens-alongside conceptual models of nature and the role of teaching in the learning process all seem to be important.

Professional behaviors: Behavior’s exhibited by myself as a teacher such as reflecting on and developing professional practice, participation in professional development, supporting colleagues, and liaising and communicating with others where

Working with this University is a pleasure.

Upsetting place to work. Restructuring taking place just before Christmas. Don't know if we have jobs in 2019. Very worrying. Good staff taking redundancy, only poor staff will remain.

Auditor (Former Employee) –  Derby22 November 2018
Rude management that micromanaged the basics of what I was doing, no parking pass for temporary staff expecting you to pay excessively for parking regardless of working for 1 hour or 8. One individual at the barriers refused my entry when told him I work there and said I cant park in the premises.

Great place, too much expectation
University Lecturer (Former Employee) –  Derby6 August 2018
Worked here for a number of years. Staff were generally really friendly and quite supportive and always pulled together.

However the University certainly expected their pound of flesh and this resulted in working extremely long hours on an almost continuous basis.

The university has had trouble defining what it stands for - but it looks like changing for the better now. More focus on academic development now; there is hope that it'll continue developing in this way.
Pros
Taking academic activities more seriously
Cons
Still too many administrators pretending to be academics
