Working with and to executive director of finance ... A good place to work and make a positive impact - although I was tasked to deliver a very large brief in a very short term including delivering and presenting: 1- a procurement strategy, future planning, centre of excellence materials and tool kits and capability plan 3- a few very last minutes critical contracts and procurement to be managed 4- some operational procurement, purchasing and accounts payable finances related to it I had little resources and support for this which was a con perahps. So good place - but a very big ambitious brief; although with changes in management due to a turn around in executive level ...my recommendations and overall strategy were not accepted...they may have changed and moved forward now...so check please. A very good executive / management team who were open to accepting advice on day to day operational contracts and procurement ...and a trusting collaborative environment, with a lot of autonomy in getting things done. A nice central London based office and environment with food and amenities close by. A very hard working and keen team - teams...who really wanted to make a difference in the lives of homeless people. Result orientated. A very good work life balance - and partial work from home options was available to me.
I enjoyed working at St Mungos, the staff and management are very friendly and helpful. A good atmosphere everyone friendly and helpful and happy.New building good location by river Thames. Lots of new buildings around there and loads of office good transportation

Care about the clients but not the staff. Happy to work staff to the bone. Exhausting work. Awful job. Don't work for them. Feel trapped and completely unsupported Gaslighted when raised concerns about the safety of staff and being overworked. Senior management zero ability to reflect on poor practice. Total shitshow
Appalling lack of support
I was based in Haringey. I had an excellent deputy. The service manager was incompetent and harmful towards staff due to very poor decision making. The deputy was doing it all and I’d be surprised if she’s still standing. It could have been a great team, but not with the person in charge of the service lacking competence in every single area. How did he even get a job? I complained upon leaving and hesrd nothing back!

I have a very personal dealing with St Mungos and my experience has been supported by many other examples. This is not a charity ii its purest from it may have charity status but it runs its hostels on a profit basis. I had a friend who became homeless and i use to visit him at the Wharton street central London facility, block of small rooms. In one of the rooms there was a 63 year old man who had been part of the council as a street sweeper for islington council specifically Chappell market. He had become homeless and suffered from addiction he had been in the St Mungo facility for over a year and slowly fallen into arrears for his room. He was evicted without virtually any notice and eneded up living in the bin storage at the side of chappell market he lived there for a year till another proper homeless charity finally stepped in. This man was frail, old and needed help...never mind that he had worked his whole life for islington council. St Mungos literally threw him back out on the streets because of about £700 arrears. Please do not donate to these villians.
Good job satisfaction, but hard hitting at times. Each day is unpredictable. A positive of this is that you can plan your own diary and manage your own workload as you choose, but you have to be resilient and flexible in your approach, as priorities often change without any notice and you regularly find yourself dealing with difficult situations which can be hard to deal wit if you do not have good support systems in place. But the job satisfaction is high as you meet some great individuals and you can see that your role is having a positive impact on peoples lives.
In the time I worked here, they attempted to force me to stop doing my second job, which was paying my mortgage. Rather than doing any actual work, the organisation seems determined on an incessant rotation of meetings (about doing work). In the event that you are successful at your job, you will be stabbed in the back, by people who would rather accrue salary increments than.theirs.theirs
Busy. Phone calls to service users to book or confirm appointment. Advocacy on their behalf to local authority, home visits to service users. Outlook to manage daily and weekly calendar. Weekly group meetings. I learnt effective communication skills, case work, holistic approach to mental health advocacy. Culture was fast and individualistic, but friendly, sometimes had to hot spot for a workplace. The most enjoyable part of the job was getting outcomes for the service users.
There were training's and exercise sessions for volunteers and service users
jobs are not offered to volunteers as should be expected
Pros - Worked in the central location, Excellent flexibility offered for a good work life balance, very friendly staff and decent pay. - Very good for personal development as well as progression, people move around a lot internally and generally are well supported by managers. Nice office too. Cons - Work could be very reactive and resulted in a lot of time being idle without much to do. This however was quite specific to my role and team, sure other teams run differently. Nevertheless not good if you’re after job stimulation and a fast paced environment. (The job description was different from the reality) - Organisation could strongly benefit from investing in much needed softwares that allows staff to work more effectively and have up to date skills as method of working can be very outdated and rigid. - Also investing in better IT systems because that would save a lot of time. - Interview process is drawn out and unnecessary, individuals work hard to do the interviews, written tests and role play because of the promise of a great working experience. The result however is very much less than and disappointing. Many people can get better through an interview alone, so worth looking at as staff turnover is pretty high.
I was only here for a month but I did enjoy my time with St Mungos, I worked as an outreach intervention worker and was out on the streets most of my shifts.

Don’t pay you for your overtime but expect you to do it, the salary is good but the management squeeze every ounce of energy out of you for the pay you get until you burn out- but they have excellent communication abilities and talk to staff as thought they do understand but then carry on in an un caring manner anyway - no staff so you’re doing 3 peoples jobs and the people who get employed are high quality people so you’re just ruining good people who cannot help but give you their best and then end up having to leave due to stress or burn out- tbh at mungos should be ashamed of thenselves
essentially youre just a number, and woe betide you have any passion or drive for making a difference as you'll be reminded often that there is basically nothing that you do that helps. Real problem with middle management personalities and a culture of hire and fire.
I was dedicated and committed to my job and enjoyed seeing some of my clients transformed their life by engaging with their placements .
Some clients were able to meet up with the requirements that assisted them to be reconnected to their route homes while some couldn't. Those clients that compiled with the medical procedure by attending GP appointment, Mental health clinic and depot injection appointment were on their well to recovery.
