Working with SSP is hard work but there is so much to learn about customer service, food, and hygiene, etc. The best part of working there is the team, everyone in the team is nice and easy to work with from managers to colleagues, which gives a kind positivity to work there. The hardest part of the work is the long working hours and the most enjoyable part is interacting with customers from different backgrounds, which give the understanding of how the customer service can be improved to meet their expectations.
Pros
Nice people to work with and free meals on shift
Cons
Long working hours

My experience is related to the airport environment when it used to be a very busy place, especially during summertime.
The management was the worse part of my job experience.

He was not supportive at all, not able to speak with the workers. He was unable to promote teamwork. I experienced verbal harassment from a colleague. The manager ignored my complaint and I did not find any support, except other colleagues who had, among other things, had the same experience before.
Pros
Easy to get the job, with low level of English
Cons
Very busy place, no free lunch

Poor management and careless for staff, if there was staff to work, people calling sick or just not showing up. So I end up doing the work of 4 people mostly of the days!! also you have to pay for your own food!

Working with ssp at Leeds and Bradford Airport is very fast paced, and you must be prepared to work hard. There is a good team spirit overall. During the winter months though it can be quiet.

Awful company to work for!!! They expect to much from everyone. Managers have no respect for team members, you get used & tossed aside when they don’t need you anymore. They cut back to minimum staff during your bustiest times, then they except you to do 3 people’s jobs instead of 1 for minimum wage. They don’t say Thankyou ever for going that extra mile to help. You never get a thanks for anything. Honestly oviod this company!!!!

Rubbish management , they don’t listen to their employees and they’re selfish and rude to their employees , always taking the good ones for granted. The managers are bigheaded and think they know it all.

The work itself was not very challenging; it was what I expected as a team member and was actually fun. However, management was terrible. The manager had very poor communication with team members: for example, if your shift changed you usually wouldn't find out until you got to work. They were also dishonest about the reasons for cutting workers' hours. The manager also showed favouritism that really negatively affected the work environment. There was also little opportunity for perfecting your craft - practicing latte art as a barista was unrealistic because it was common to run out of milk to use for customers, never mind for personal training ambitions. Stock issues are another problem - the manager chose to prioritise reducing waste over increasing sales which meant that team members were left to explain this to customers while the manager was enjoying their many holidays. This highlights another problem - the manager refused to take responsibility when things went wrong, whether it was a fault of their own or not. I had very little trust and confidence in them as a team member and found it increasingly challenging to pretend to enjoy working for them.

All in all, I would not recommend working for SSP at all unless you are completely desperate for a job and don't have enough experience to get a job anywhere else.

Absolutely horrible/stressful place to work at. My suggestion is, do not apply unless you're absolutely desperate.
You will be exploited and expected to be at your best at all times with little to no support. This company is an absolute joke!

Horrible environment to work in and expected to multi task in such a small amount of time and achieve everything no matter what happens, such as emptying all stock while also serving customers by RUNNING back and forth from warehouse to shop floor to tills. All must be done or you get scolded no matter how busy or if any customer has a problem needing solved. Even IF after achieving all the combined mammoth tasks given, existing older team members bully and nit-pick at small easy mistakes and hound you down for it.

The Manager doesn't care less about team members and is distant and cold (once you are hired that is). The manager will post complaints against a wall near the entrance of the staff room (more like a rundown shed) naming and shaming who has done wrong by name for all to see.

I witnessed older team members bullying characters that did not match to them by giving them harder tasks, insulting and laughing at them, refusing to give staff discount and only to the ones they were friends with.

There is a Very High turnover of staff here and for obvious reasons. SSP are a disgrace whose main job is in the fining and disciplining of staff. For example, if you lose the name badge you are given a £50 fine for a replacement (it’s a tiny white badge with your name on it), if you lose the jacket its £75. They have cameras in every corner of the shop and monitor every staff member movements. SSP will then feed back to the manager complaining about a staff member for things such as, no yawning EVER even at the start of a half 4 in the morning shift when the shop is not open

Pros
Some nice working colleagues
Cons
Lack of training, care, bullying culture and minimum wage not worth it

Often you are left alone manning a bar or cafe even in the busy months. The managers are often never to be seen except when there is an audit, although even as a relatively new member of staff I was left to facilitate audits on my own. The staff are expected to work 5/6 days a week, long shifts in the middle of the night and you only get £1 extra an hour until 5am. The wage was minimum wage despite the stress you have to endure. There were countless times when flights were cancelled and I had to stay for hours after the shift ended jbecause no manager could be foun.

Horrible place to work. Treated like a donkey.
Do yourself a favor and don't apply for this position unless you are starving. Very long hours, no smile, no life, always understaffed, unpaid overtimes, minimun wage or less.

Management is a joke, if you have any questions it's better to 'talk to your hand'
Pros
none
Cons
No Management, Min Wage or less, Very busy, Understaffed

Avoid at all costs! Management don't care about the staff at all, they will act like they do and are there for you but are most definitely not. Supervisors are overworked for how they get paid. Team members are over worked and under appreciated. This job will wear you down as far as you can go. Avoid avoid avoid

A horrible company to work for that takes advantage of young foreigners and old people, who they work into the ground. They have data leaks of their workers information from airports with no feedback about from who and where. The receptionist in the London office just fobs you off to an email and call centre menu option, multiple choice 1 to 100 hotline. Don't work for them. They are evil. You have been warned.

Starbucks was good to begin with, however hours began to get cut and their only focus was making more money on less staff. Every Staff member was stressed and the place turned volatile. Staff/Management followed the rule of bully or be bullied. Horrible!
