a somewhat Rewarding and simultaneously thankless job. plenty of opportunity to develop or branch out into other departments. shift working is tough for a work/life, family balance. patience is a given must, you need to be quite resilient and open minded. Bear in mind nobody dials 999 with good news . During one day you can expect to experience every emotion and on times it can be quite upsetting. long hours and shift work would not suit anybody with a busy social schedule. working as a team is paramount . can be very rewarding . The pay does not reflect on the pressurised workload, depending on the department .
Control Room Operator (Former Employee) – Bridgend – 14 May 2018
I personally found it unfriendly, harsh with long hours and constant criticism. Would have excelled at job if workplace culture was less critical and managers were more supportive rather than out to get new people for making mistakes after only 12 weeks training.
Secondary Education Work Experience (Former Employee) – Cardiff – 20 January 2018
work experience, able to interact with staff, understand procedures and gain information from all personnel levels of the department and gain experience of working hours in a thriving environment. Due to confidential information and sensitive material provided I am unable to elaborate on finer details.
Special Constable (Former Employee) – Townhill and Sketty, Swansea – 25 August 2017
This is the perfect job to build your knowledge and work skills for future jobs. It will teach you about the laws, your customer service skills, how to handle difficult and hard situations. It will also teach you who you are as a person, to show compassion towards other people. It helps the community and it makes you feel you're doing something different.
From a 'frontline' perspective, police management have gone far too much toward pleasing everyone except their own staff. Today's Political Correctness is stretched to include idiotic matters which reduce the effectiveness of those tasked with keeping law and order.
Call Handler (Former Employee) – Cardiff – 7 July 2017
Whilst often working in a high pressured environment due to the nature of business, the opportunities to further your career are endless. Work life balance can sometimes be compromised but this can be resolved with the right management team on board.
Detective/Police Constable (Former Employee) – Swansea – 9 May 2017
Mostly a fun workplace with great camaraderie. However a very high pressure job where everyone carried huge workloads and appeared to receive little thanks from many victims as well as other agencies who were supposed to be working with us. We were also required to work overtime, sometimes 20 hour shifts without argument.
Good camaraderie, and job satisfaction when a good result acchieved.
Sometimes very long hours, lack of gratitude from some victims and outside agencies, massive work pressures and workloads.
An excellent employer which provides great career opportunities supported by the ethos of the Police family and the support networks in place. This is a challenging opportunity for someone who is driven and motivated to serve the public. South Wales Police will do the rest and provide training and equimement enabling you to deliver quality a quality service to the public.
Poor management and lack of respect for personal life
Police Constable (Current Employee) – South Wales police – 10 January 2017
Difficult job not very rewarding due to dealing with so many savoury characters the balance is all wrong and there's never any gratitude for good work. Management are very restricting and there is no officer discretion. The police cancel many of your rest days to suit shortages in staff and there is no consideration for plans already made. If your called for court it will most often be your only rest days before going straight back into your normal six days on.
Long hours never finish on time don't get paid for working on.
Police Officer (Former Employee) – Cardiff City – 28 December 2016
A demanding career which is not for many but it brings out many character traits which you think you did not have, abili6to think on your feet to problem solved and to support other. To be assertive when required..ultimately a rewarding career.
