Fake happiness and Bad management
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) –  Cumbria1 June 2019
The whole 'Smile with a giggle' is false representation. The environment is based on the concept of fake happiness.

The customers constantly complain about overpriced products which while you agree completely, you have to smile and apologise.

The management (especially regional manager) would always push you to be too friendly to the point where it would make customers uncomfortable and they would leave, then the management would complain that you couldn't get a sale out of them.

The hours were constantly taken away from people and given to management. I was on an 8 hour contract with a verbal guarantee that I would be able to get quite a few more hours on top, which was reinforced multiple times during the training period.

Almost every shift I worked the staff was pressured by management into buying a few small products so we could meet our daily sales target, which means that the better than minimum wage we got was being given right back to the company.

The only benefits you actually have are:
- a discount on overpriced stock, which makes it barely affordable
- a wage higher than the national living wage
Pros
Not minimum wage
Cons
Bad hours, management and environment.

Don’t get sucked in!
Assistant Manager (Current Employee) –  London, Greater London22 April 2019
The pay may be great but they feed you this lie that it’s all fun and games to work here but the reality is you lone trade, there’s no toilet or water facilities and there’s so many “black out” periods in a year you struggle to take holiday or get moaned at if your day off falls on a bank holiday!
Stay away
Pros
Money is good
Cons
It’s all a sick joke

Good startout management job. Easy to progress to management, but nothing beyond.
Store Manager (Current Employee) –  Essex16 January 2019
Smiggle, for the first year of my role was a fantastic job with opportunities thrown at me. However, upper management only care about profit, and making money. They have increasingly shown that over the years they care less and less about their staffs well-being and welfare.

The job in itself is so fun and rewarding, especially knowing you have made every child that has come into store, as happy as possible. You light up those children and it makes it feel really worthwhile.

This isn't an easy job. You have to constantly change over the layout of the store to keep up to date with all of the new product, but whilst doing this you're most likely lone trading for 4-6/9 hours of the working day. Meaning you cant actually get anything done due to being unable to get the stock you need. There's also alot of unpaid extra hours that you put in with nothing in return.

Staff don't want to stay working for you as hours are always being cut (which i personally think is completely understandable, who wants to work 4 or even less hours a week) And often our staff are college aged, meaning there's not much availability.

As long as you have a good team behind you, then its not the worst job in the world. But expect to work a lot of unpaid hours, with a salary that's under the national average.
Pros
5 weeks holiday, hour lunch break, other store managers are helpful and kind.
Cons
long unpaid hours, no sick pay, working xmas eve, boxing day and new years day

Awful place
Manager (Former Employee) –  England13 October 2018
Lone trading a lot at least twice a week all day open till close along with at least an hour a day . No toilets
Too much work load for size of team. High budgets and targets
No thanks for hard work
No cctv no security. But yet high expectations to control stock loss you have to walk the money to the bank
Would never recommend to work ever
Promises made and broken. No pay rises or bonus awards or rewards you will build up Unpaid overtime you cannot get paid for and never enough staff cover for you to have time off to compensate the overtime
Awful
Pros
You get paid once a month sometimes the right amount
Cons

Good for part-time temporary work
Key Holder/Sales Assistant (Former Employee) –  Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire27 September 2018
As a Part-time sales assistant the job was perfect however once you start to progress in the company the pay does not become worth it for the expectations you are given. A lot of lone trading whether you are simply a key holder or a manager. You are expected to be able to stay longer on your shift whether you're paid for the extra hours or not. However, the teams you work with are always reliable and very supportive.
Pros
Flexible hours as a sales assistant (usually given more than contracted), great team relationships in all stores
Cons
Lone trading, no benefits

Work load is massive and a lot for one person wen you have to do table changes, bay changes, serve customers, delivery’s
Customers moan if to be fair you can’t get something out the stockroom so you lose a sale but then your moaned at wen figured n kpi are down

terrible place to work
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) –  London21 May 2018
this company is a shambles. you cannot plan your actual life with this job.shifts are changed with short notice. shifts are cut short, management are terrible and rude. you do so much work and do not get praised for any of it. hard work and no one recognises. I advise you not to work for this company as your patience will run short and you will have enough. management will stand about and do nothing all day then criticise your job. the worst company ever and needs to be sorted out immediately. head office do not care neither do regional managers. . the only good thing are your team mates which are fun to work around. its like a little family, not including managers.
Pros
50% off, colleagues
Cons
too many to list

Brilliant Company to work for!
Supervisor (Current Employee) –  South West22 February 2018
Such a fun and exciting up and coming brand to work for. So many employee benefits. The overall technical structure could be vastly improved in terms of communications from top to bottom and systems put in place seem either backward or outdated for the UK. Management is great and the company is very positive.

You're better off applying somewhere else
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) –  London, Greater London9 October 2017
Having worked there for a considerable amount of time I think I can definitely say working for Smiggle just really isn't worth it. For the amount of stress you have to endure there, there really aren't many benefits - no pay rise, no appreciation from your managers or even the company as a whole. Head office staff are rude and to be quite honest get in the way more than they help (sometimes leaving the store in more of a mess than it was in the first place!). Hours are inconsistent and shifts can literally change overnight sometimes. Honestly, if you're looking for a consistent job with a decent wage then Smiggle isn't for you. You're better off finding a job elsewhere.
Pros
The team at my store were amazing and I truly miss them
Cons
A very stressful and negative environment to work in

Good job to have a student
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) –  Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear24 August 2017
Good and sociable job to have. No shift is ever the same and get to meet loads of new people who come into the shop. Hours are fairly flexible and work around studying/ exam times quite well.
Pros
good for students, half price discount on items

Wouldnt Work Here Again
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) –  Bolton, Greater Manchester12 May 2017
Worked as a Christmas temp, the managers of the store expect you to do everything for them, once I got blamed for wrong prices even though I didn't put the tags up and it was, in fact, one of the managers that had done this. The managers never want you to be stood doing nothing or even talking for extra time than normal with a customer, regardless of them doing this or not. They would have someone they know come in and talk to them for a length of time. They would have drinks on the shop floor but I was not allowed too. The hours were demanding, I came in for a 9-2 but ended staying till close with only a half hour break for lunch. One manager is really snidey and hypocritical, puts on a smile and tries to be nice but then insults the way i work. Would definitely not work here again, couldn't think of anything worse!!!
Pros
i recieved extra pay because i was a temp and didnt take an annual leave
Cons
dont get paid overtime and sometimes over time is a good hour/hour and a half

Sales Assistant (Current Employee) –  Bluewater, Kent14 April 2017
A typical day at work starts with restocking shelf's, making kits, greeting customers and sorting out the days delivery. I've leaned communication skills and how to work in a team. the management at Smiggle are all incredibly friendly and are their to help you when you need support. The hardest part of the job reorganising the shop. Most enjoyable part is meeting new people.
Pros
Meeting new people everyday.
Cons
The benefits.

Very hard work
Store manager (Former Employee) –  Uk25 February 2017
If you enjoy your own company and lone trading for hours on end this is the job for you it's very fast paced and very draining same thing day in day out. Your area manager will reduce your staff hours and try to make you save money all the time my advice would be stay clear of this company they are growing far too fast and haven't a clue what they are doing as for great benefits there is none......

Home time
Cons
Too many to mention

fun but unorganised management and not enough hours
Sales assistant (Former Employee) –  Leamington Spa, UK23 February 2017
Very repetitive and dull, management appalling and unorganised. If the manager forgot to write a shift on the rota or left one out, you weren't paid for it and no proof unless you remember to note down your hours yourself. Christmas temps replacing original staff and getting more hours than us over xmas period. Not refunded train ticket costs for travelling to cover other stores. Products cheap tat and must've processed about 20 returns a day. Looks fun and is happy and colourful but overall disappointing, draining and stressful.
Pros
50% off staff discount
Cons
Expensive anyway, not enough hours.

Sales Assistant (Former Employee) –  Maidstone, Kent1 February 2017
The typical day at work in smiggle would be going in with a positive attitude helping sort the shelves and helping customers find what they were looking for and with any enqieries they may have. I learned many new skills such as how to provide the best customer serivce and working on tills. The management was great and working was always fun. the hardest part would be pricing and shelving but it would get easier as time went on. The most enjoyable bit was working on the tills and seeing people get great customer serivce.
Pros

Shocking place to work don't do it !
