I love working for Roman! The people you meet everyday was amazing. Until, I got left on my own to run the WHOLE SHOP BY MYSELF. Then when the area manager came to check up on me she then complained about how the back area was dirty and screamed and shouted at me in front of customers. I tried to explain that I'm on my own with NO HELP and that at least I kept the shop floor tidy but she wasnt having any of it! I handed in my notice 2 days later. Once she leaves I will return. Apart from the RUDE area manager & its low pay, its an amazing job to work at.
Long breaks, quiet, great for a first time job
Rude Area Managers & Low pay
As a P/T sales assistant, it was an ideal walk-to job after working in education for almost 20 years. The manager was brilliant and wouldn't ask you to do anything that she wouldn't do herself...the other lady I worked with was also really nice. We had a good laugh and enjoyed chatting to the customers. Unfortunately, it was not ran very efficiently from the top. The owners did not listen to managers when it came to improvements/suggestions, you were expected to lone trade quite a lot (which my manager completely disagreed with) and there was no staff discount, sick pay or maternity leave if you work p/t. The company is ran in a very old fashioned way, still using fax machines! You were not allowed to take holidays from 15th November to 9th January either. However, the girls I worked with and in other stores were always available for support. Having been made redundant recently, the area manager came in, in person, to let us know. Apparently she was told to do it over the phone...says it all really...
Lone trading, no staff discount, no sick pay/maternity leave (not that it applied to me)
Awful company to work for. They have no interest in their staff or culture of the work place. No progression. Low pay with no pay reviews or bonuses. Stuck in their old ways and have no intention of changing. Young people who are brought into the business never stay and are looked down upon by older employees. No originality, everything is copied from other companies. No-one works as part of team and you feel like you are constantly being watched by HR. You can barely talk to colleagues and god forbid if you laugh or look like you are having a bit of fun. Its honestly just a draining place to work and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
The list is never ending.
I left Roman in July 2019 due to rudeness from the area manager. In February 2019 to Mid July 2019 I was left on my own to do everything. Open to Close, hardly got a break and basically carried the Crawley store on my back. In July the area manager came to see if everything was alright, she went to the stock room/staff area and called me into the back, I had to leave the staff door open as I was the only one working on the shop floor. She began to yell and shout at me basically in front of the customers at the store saying about how "messy and disgusting" it was back there. I then told her that I have been on my own since February with no help and I wasnt staying after I was meant to clock out as I didnt get paid and my dad used to pick me up. She then turned around and said she "could fire me on the spot" and how I'm "not fit for the company" and told me to carry on with my work. I came home and cried because I'm human at the end of the day. The way they pay their staff as well. If you are under 18 you get paid £6.50. I would LOVE to work for this company again as I LOVED customers and in-store staff. If the area manager didnt work there anymore I would go back in a second, just a shame SHE lets down the company.
Customer, In-Store Staff, Breaks, Quiet
RUDE Area Managers, Pay, Dont get paid overtime.
No challenge Very expensive Very poorly run from the top Lack of communication They need to take on board there staff's ideas as we are the ones on the front line and know are customers
Excellent previous area manager
Company don't care about employees
I worked for the company for a year and a half and would not return if the opportunity arise. Due to lockdown we were made redundant over the phone and recieved no support at all in this time. Long days loan trading in a freezing cold shop.
Great team and Customers.
Lack of support and the fact that your own website is your own competition is ridiculous.

Worked here for 3 months over Christmas where I learnt quite a lot of customer service skills. As for the people I worked with, all the other girls in customer service were really nice and easy to talk to, along with other staff from different departments, however, I found a few of the managers very unfair and u professional. During my time here, I had a fair few appointments which were approved weeks in advance, however they ended my contract a week before my contract was up due to “taking too many unapproved doctors appointments”, on top of this, my manager also told my colleagues reasons why I was at appointments and why I was off sick, very unprofessional. Upon leaving, I was not given a chance to collect my stuff, and was only given half of it, out of 1 of my drawers. It’s been months and they have still not replied to my emails asking for it back.
Was told I was salaried as I was manager I worked 40 hrs week each month my wages were different. When I asked I was told I was paid hourly. Still don’t under stand if I worked 40hrs my wages should be the same each week!!!! Some weeks I worked 45 or more but was never paid for that they also said I could only have half hr lunch each day. I worked the same as all the staff in Beales who all had hour lunch .lunch.
Good place to work if you want to get into ladieswear fashion, design, merchandising. There are several departments that you can work in. There is the design room, warehousing, accounts, sample and pattern room. Or in one of the many stores around the UK
Worked at Head Office where bullying is rife. Upper management have a domineering attitude with no man-management skills - there are clear favourites who are given preferential treatment and incentives. Favourites are allowed to bully other staff members both junior and of an equivalent level. I have 15 years experience in my field and have headed large project successfully in previous roles which was I assume why I was given the role at Roman. However once in place my attempts to modernise and stream line efficiencies and introduce new ideas were routinely ridiculed and shouted down by 'favourites' without similar experience or proven track record in a number of much larger organisations. Avoid like the plague if you value your mental health and self-esteem
Management haven't got clue they got they're favouritism people mainly foreigners over they're own canteen area is awful absolute messy money is terrible they expect u to hit your targets and don't get no bonuses or thanks for.it.u just get treated like a working slave very bad place to work do not work here it's no good
I absolutely loved working for this company, my area manager was amazing, and I loved giving customer service because you are sometimes a personal shopper Creating a perfect outfit for my customer. You do have a small team and you are expected to do all floor changes within your hours, pay could be better but that's the way retail is now and it helps to have job security
Poorly run company who don't take care of staff. bad management both in-store and head office. Area manager gossips about employees to her favourite managers. Not approachable as you don't know who she might tell! No regular rota as its always changed to suit the manager first and we have to fit in around her childcare needs. High turnover of staff due to managers mood swings!
Underpaid. Worse company iv ever worked for Expect you to cover management have you working all hours God sends No appreciation Unachievable targets Iv worked here 6 years and this place has done nothing but dragged me down iv known colleagues to actually be sectioned because of stress from this ccompany
Days can be very slow and boring especially as you can lone work for long periods. Expected to do any tasks outside service window although this is when you have no staff. Only paid 9-5.30 when the store is open, expected to cash up on your own time. Half hour unpaid lunch break but only if you’ve worked over 6 hours. Most part time staff are expected to work without a break although their shift is over a lunchtime period. Only pleasant thing a bout the job are my colleagues
I work for Roman at the moment and my manager is amazing. So understanding and will try and help me as much as she can, whether it’s to fit shifts in around my family or to shift swap at the last minute. The area manager is also very nice and approachable. I work in a very busy shop and all staff pull together and support each other. I have made friends easily and have never felt left out. I am always paid on time and my wages have always been correct
