Job culture
It is a very difficult place to work if you have pride in doing a good job. There are huge grey areas and lack of consistency that management gives staff and the staff get the blame when things go wrong. Management are often absent and have very little knowledge of how things are operating. There is a terrible blame culture and lack of team ethic which makes the job a lot more difficult than it needs to be.

Job culture
Terrible work place and blame culture results in anyone with any technical competency or management skills leaving, meaning staff are promoted into jobs for which they are wholly ill equipped. After a very short time, these newly promoted individuals, lacking the required subject knowledge or people skills, will acquiesce to upper management and accept the porton biopharma mantra of "blame anyone as long as it's not me" and will happily push any of their 'subordinates' under the bus to deflect attention from their own ineptitude. A company, without competition, supported by the UK government, which struggles for profitability. Work life balance is a joke. Working weekends is mandatory however working a day at the weekend doesn't entitle you to a day off in the week, and their total in ability to keep staff means there is often not enough trained staff to cover the weekend, which means if you are one of the lucky trained staff you can look forward to working 12 days in a row, having 2 days off, then repeating this for months. The lack of adequate staffing also means you will be required to do roughly 10 hours work in a 7.5 hour day, and if you're not done you're staying because awful forward planning means everyone is playing catch up, and pressure will be put on you to work many extra hours, refusal to do this will result in comments from management about the kids which you are allowing to die. If you make any error due to this work load you can expect a public dressing down, in an attempt from your manager to show their manager, what an effective manager they are. It is - more...
Pros
Free parking. Although the potholes can cause spinal compression.
Cons

The culture is terrible, no support. Constantly want more and more from you. The directors are either aware of the issues and ignore them (which I believe to be true) or they have no idea. Major resource issues and still expect work to be done. The company needs to take a good look at itself.
Pros
Holiday entitlement
Cons
Long hours, no support, toxic environment

Horrible and toxic place to work. Management are stuck in their old ways with no support for staff. No career development, the pay is below industry standard, and in the middle of nowhere.
Pros
30 days holiday
Cons
Management bullying culture

I have really enjoyed working here, there is a great atmosphere around the place and you feel like you are making a real difference. I've been sent on training courses and management are open to reasonable requests, so if you show willing it gets noticed but promotion isn't an overnight entitlement. All the staff are really friendly and there is a good community feel between everyone. The pay isn't as much as some places but the holiday entitlement is amazing at 30 days plus bank holidays. There is also lots of investment with new equipment and labs having been built, plus the production department has had millions spent to update the facilites that had suffered from lack of investment in the past. New systems are being introduced from industry so the potential for the company to grow and develop is definitely there, they just need to get rid of the remaining old offices.
Pros
Great people really friendly
Cons
Still needs some modernizing

A typical day at work involves trying to make a start on the scheduled work load, only to have to be delayed whilst looking for a free computer and working printer to print the required documentation. Next you have to squeeze into an over crowded lab to prepare the required reagents to use on the obsolete, over used instruments that have a high chance to fail, only to find yourself being blamed for not working fast enough to complete your scheduled 8-9 hours work in the allocated 7.5 hour day. There is no real scope to learn anything outside of your very specific job role, as the company is losing staff so quickly that it's all they can do to train up new starters before the next person hands in their notice. No one is willing to accept that lack of resource is an issue, as that implies that senior positions are at fault, and it is easier to blame and staff lower down the ladder and chase them off. simply put: Not enough space, Not enough equipment, Not enough trained staff, Not enough time, Not enough support, Too much blame.
Pros
none
Cons
Not enough space, Not enough equipment, Not enough trained staff, Not enough time, Not enough support, Too much blame.

Technologically backward, the quality management systems lag behind the industry standard. The company culture is really good, you feel respected as an employee. There is also a lot to learn at the company.
Pros
Fantastic Training
Cons
Quality management system archaic

PortonBiopharma emits a vile culture throughout the workplace that has seemingly plagued its management, who are often found fondling their Gemba Boards or unjustly punishing their subordinates. On a bright note I have decided to give PBL and overall rating of one star! As apparently indeed will not let me award them with nothing.
Pros
colleagues
Cons
Not enough room

A typical day at work - Carry out my daily duties and anything else that comes up. Career progression is illusive. A side from that is a nice place to work.
Pros
The instructions they give are clear
Cons
Some of the systems and methods used are rather out dated

It used to be a great place, you felt appreciated and respected as a valued member of the team. No longer. Since PBL became a separate company away from the PHE the attitude of the senior management is 'if you dont like it there's the gate' dissension and criticism led to veiled threats of sackings. The impression is that 'consultation ' to improve and modernise is just a tick box exercise, nothing happens, nothing improves. The company is stagnating. The management - those that stay - are simply ineffective now, Staff turn over in all departments is staggeringly high but no one in charge seems to be asking why? The staff are frustrated and disappointed, moral at an all time low and are voting with their feet. There is very little true experience in the company left. A lot of middle to senior management have left or are leaving. I wish I could be more positive, it was a great place to work, when I left I could not wait to get out.
Pros
great colleagues
Cons
management. lack of investment and staffing levels . blame culture.

Words can not begin to describe how utterly awful this place is. I was very excited to start working here but it didn't take long to realise how disjointed and poorly managed the FPP is. The staff are treated like complete rubbish and I could not wait to escape! The shift are extremely hard working but management fail to realise this and actually appreciate the hard work they do. When is the company going to finally realise why they are losing so many experienced staff? They only have a very few left so wake up Porton Biopharma, start treating your staff with respect and actually value the people that are keeping the place running before it's too late.
Pros
Apart from the poor hardworking shift team, I failed to see a single one during my time there.
Cons
The space provided isn't big enough to list them all.

Management is firmly in the 80s, no care or respect for staff. If you want to to use production as a stepping stone up in the company dont. Your move will be blocked as production has a huge staff turnover and they cant afford for people to progress out. Wages have dropped massively since stepping away from phe and dont reflect the hard going 24/7 culture
Pros
Good production shift staff
Cons
Everything that could be negative in a job

They promise staff development but really couldn't care less about staff. The overall culture is one of "disagree and you know where the door is". I can only speak for production but it is truly the most awful place I have ever worked. Rubbish pay, no appreciation regardless of how hard you work and no respect or compassion for staff.
Pros
Some good benefits
Cons
Terrible management

The company recently split from PHE and it shows. Everything has to go through mountains of red tape and committee after committee before being decided that the old way is probably the best. Zero investment into equipment and infrastructure and no care whatsovere for the staff.

Good place to work overall, i have learnt a lot of new skills including working to standard operating procedures and writing them and working on technical information. I have completed an NVQ level in warehousing and Storage and gained my forklift license. I have been given the opportunity to train staff and assist with the day to day running of the stores.
