Interesting workplace
Census Senior Project Manager (Former Employee) –  Southport, Merseyside8 September 2019
The company doesn't exist any more, so I can't tell you much more about it. The census only happens once every 10 years, so it any review is unlikely to be required.

I was able to take build my knowledge through courses in a range of different areas such as economics, statistics and coding.

There is a strong organisational culture that promotes wellbeing and personal development.

Intern (Former Employee) –  Newport, Newport22 July 2019
I really enjoyed my placement but was a bit frustrated with the lack of interesting tasks that I was asked to do. Flexible working hours and good opportunities to learn data software such as STATA R Python etc.
Pros
Flexible working hours and good opportunities to learn data software
Cons
Interns have to do a lot of the more boring work

Obsessed with diversity over mental health
When i resigned due to anxiety not one member of my management chain tried to talk me out of leaving or even bothered to call me on the phone

These reviews are ultimately subjective and some departments will be better than others

Fun and frustrating
Field Interviewer (Current Employee) –  Fareham3 July 2019
The interviews itself are quite pleasant and you do tend to connect with people and have a good chat while interviewing.
And if you can talk about anything about the area or make a joke to break the ice, it does put the interviewer defences down.

You work alone most of the time but its the repetitive knocking on door of the same address to persuade the resident to allow you to carry on with the interview.

The interview codding its all about practising.

I feel the the surveys should be compulsory with the rights to refuse certain questions. Because when you spend most of the day knocking on the door and same time you travel a certain distance even a 10 minutes distance becomes quite frustrating because you know it will be a wasting trip.
Pros
You make your own time around your life
Cons
it's not fun to constantly knock on people's doors knowing they're in

Long hours on call 24/7
Field Interviewer (Current Employee) –  Leicestershire25 June 2019
need to be on call 24/7.
damage your vehicle, red tape of the scale, just so you give up!
technology is forever breaking down and the time & expenses procedure is just a pain, get the slightest thing wrong & it's rejected, even though your manager could easily correct it!
Expected to learn new surveys, even though you have no motivation to do so!
the only good thing is you can relax when out on calls, but said that, you could end up driving in the centre of cities, If you get any fines at all, you are responsible for them, no support from them at all.
1 months notice to leave
if your looking for a decent job with a reasonable wage, then look somewhere else this will not be the job for you
Pros
Peace & quiet when on the road
Cons
to many to mention!

ONS interviewer, current
Field Interviewer (Current Employee) –  UK16 June 2019
I have worked for the ONS for over 13 years and it has become increasingly worse over the last few years.

Constant micro management of performance and little to nothing in return. More time spent on accountability and resolving IT failures than carrying out the interview work.

Training reduced to phone calls and self learning.

Staff reluctant to claim the actual amount of time they spend on tasks, for fear of reprisal from management.

The salary has eroded over the years due to benefits being made harder to claim.

It is supposed to be part time, 20 hrs a week, but one has to be available 6 days a week between 9am and 9pm.

The transformation programme implemented by management has diminished motivation amongst staff.

10 yrs ago this was a great organisation to work in, but if you want to go out talking to the public, collecting statistical information, suggest you work for a different company. It is no longer a nice organisation to work for.
Pros
Not the ones there used to be
Cons
part time job, requiring full time availability. Eroded benefits. Micro management

Constant performance monitoring!
Field Interviewer/Mentor (Current Employee) –  Home Based22 April 2019
I have worked for the ONS for over 10 years and it has become increasingly worse over the last few years.

Constant micro management of performance and little to nothing in return.

This organisation will literally work you to the bone and give you a salary that’s worse than stacking shelves in a supermarket.

A job that was once a joy is now nothing greater than awful!
Pros
Flexible to a degree
Cons
Salary, micro management and very unfair how performance is measured.

Too paper bound
Field Interviewer (Former Employee) –  Scotland19 April 2019
Typical day would be driving around Scotland interviewing members of the public in their own homes. Worked from home. Didn't see a manager much. The most enjoyable part of the job was travelling and meeting people. The hardest part of the job was the lack of organisational support.

Warm and friendly organisation to work for
Fiel Interviewer (Former Employee) –  Home based office30 October 2018
Very supportive management team with carefully planned training given at onset and ongoing. Close colleague working relationships encouraged, probably due to the fact that working as a Field Interviewer can be quite a lonely position. Working from home and travelling sometimes long distances, in order to conduct interviews with members of the public in their own homes. Careful and meticulous planning and preparation required in order to meet timescales but a very enjoyable experience to meet people from all walks of life.
Pros
Subject to deadlines, can work flexibly
Cons
Can work many hours over basic hours at busy periods

Non Compliance Manager (Current Employee) –  Fareham, Hampshire22 October 2018
Great place to work for a good work/home balance with flexi hours and WFH encouraged. But fast paced in the build up to each Census. Lack of good senior leadership and decision making creates frustration and stress.
Pros
Flexi hours, voluntary group work within ONS
Cons
Lower paid than other civil service, culture changes needed

Telephone Interviewer (Current Employee) –  Titchfield30 July 2018
It’s not the job which I desire but the best and foremost thing about ONS is the fact that everyone can get along and have a laugh. It’s all taken seriously, but you’re able to enjoy yourself at the same time.
Pros
