Creative, rewarding and demanding
Senior Lecturer (Former Employee) – Newcastle upon Tyne – 16 March 2017
The job was extremely demanding but very rewarding. I was effectively responsible for the education of degree level students in a subject area designed by me. I was responsible for delivering a curriculum that I had personally designed. If I felt that the delivery of that needed changing then I was free to do so. I was required to keep up to date with changes in my subject area and make relevant changes to the curriculum that I was delivering. I was responsible for tutoring, mentoring and assessing adult learners. This was extremely rewarding. The job also allowed me to pursue, indeed it was expected that I would pursue, areas of personal research related to my subject area.
I did find the management culture difficult, and this is what precipitated my decision to leave this post and pursue work as a self-employed contractor. I did find that generally my colleagues were easy-going and generally I enjoyed the working environment.
