realistic view
Working within the metropolitan police you need to know when to detach your feelings and become professional. This is not a job for someone that is unable to do this. The job title of a communications officer comes with 12 hour shifts 4-5 times a week including weekends and bank holidays.
This is a great role for its salary but not amazing for work life balance.

Vibrant work environment, challenging and rewarding
Typically a shift would be 12 hours long usually working 5 days then 5 rest days. Days would begin at least 12 hours after your last shift. A good work place environment with colleagues/management always willing to help. Difficult adjusting to night shifts after working a day shift especially with young family. Not for the feint hearted as you are dealing with real time emergencies. I learned that I can adapt quickly and empathetically with often distressing situations. Most enjoyable part of the job was helping to save lives whilst reassuring people they will be ok.
Pros
A real chance to help people, good pension ad range of benefits
