Lazy managers and constant anxiety
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) – Chichester, West Sussex – 6 March 2018
I worked for Marks and Spencers for over 2 years, I have worked in every single department and can safely say they are all as bad as each other. The only good thing i can say about them as employers is the pay is half decent, but they stretch you so thinly that you feel like you're doing 4 peoples jobs at once so the pay seems deserved. Everyday the managers would walk through the store, ignoring all staff which is just demeaning and rude, carrying their starbucks and a bag of donuts which they would eat in their office having locked themselves in there away from customers and other staff. I have worked at two different stores which both ended up being very similar, any type of senior team member eg section coordinator, seemed to do very little work and to be hiding in the back offices for 99% of the day, coming out to tell us we werent working hard enough. I have a very good work ethic and have had no issues from any previous, or my current, employer. I worked with women who had been there 40+ years, one lady had only had one birthday off in the last 5 years. She was promised the time off then told by someone else she couldnt have it, then told she could. This lack of respect and organisation is very stressful for staff. To summarise, there is a blatant hierarchy which is both demotivating and demeaning.

managers, sick pay loop holes.
