Kitchen Sales Design Apprentice (Former Employee) –  Leeds, West Yorkshire17 April 2019
The most enjoyable part of my job was taking customers around the showrooms and showing them how our products work. Giving them the best support and advice through the process of designing them their dream kitchen.

More interested in figures than people
ASSISTANT MANAGER (Former Employee) –  Bristol, Bristol24 March 2019
A typical day started at 7 and ended at 5ish without a lunch break. You are always looked down on if you took a break. Hardest part of the job was the management who did nothing but sit back and earn the substantial amounts in bonus whilst you do all the work. Breaking your back every day, being sworn at by customers and being put down by your manager was the usual days process. Your home life is non existent as you are expected to work much more than your 44 hours but no overtime paid. When you spoke out, you were victimised and as the higher management put it, if the figures are there that’s what matter. They do not care about their staff. Awful place to work

An exceptional business with great culture
Depot Manager (Current Employee) –  South Yorkshire10 March 2019
I’ve spent a number of years working for Howdens and I can genuinely say that I’ve never worked anywhere with such a great culture. Most of the people in the business are great, hard-working, enthusiastic individuals with drive and determination to succeed.

The business itself rewards those who put in and go above and beyond the expectation, with a fantastic bonus scheme, generous holidays, flexible working hours to fit around your life away from work and other job perks also. There are regular incentives for depot staff also.

As with any business, the expectations are high, but so are the standards and I’ve never come across a firm so focused on the health and safety of their employees.

Within this industry, Howdens are a breath of fresh air when compared with the alternatives.
Pros
Bonus, generous salary, annual leave entitlement.
Cons
Not going to suit everyone, constant hard work required!

Assistant Product Manager (Former Employee) –  Northampton, Northamptonshire24 February 2019
Good company to work for, good salary, well looked after and good small business culture even though it is a large company. Not too many opportunities in way of progression.

Avoid At All Costs!!!
Sales Rep (Former Employee) –  UK23 February 2019
Where do I start?

Expected to work through your lunch hour (un-paid) every day!

An IT system that's stuck in the 1980's!

Unwritten rule of every other Saturday off NEVER happened!

Only allowed to have 3 and half days off in 6 months!

Relentless chasing of new accounts, despite local area being at saturation point!

Goal posts constantly being moved, on completely unrealistic targets!

Fuel allowance doesn't cover your actually fuels costs, so you end up subsidising the Company out of your own pocket.

A "Bullying" culture from top to bottom in the Company.

No matter, what you did, it was never good enough and an absolute lack of praise in the Company!

The fact that they've had 6 Sales Representatives in three years, tells you everything you need to know about the Company!

Try treating your employees as a resource, rather than being disposable!
Pros
You leave at 5pm!
Cons
Everything else!

Enjoyable place of work
Counter Sales (Current Employee) –  Thurso19 February 2019
My place of work is fairly high tempo so the day passes in a flash. As employees we are well looked after, our management team are very helpful and everyone is fairly driven to make sure we meet our targets, the hardest part is finding sales in rural areas to keep meeting our targets and the most enjoyable part of the job is meeting a variety of people every day.
Pros
No set lunchtime, Low stress environment, Good boss
Cons
Dusty warehouse working conditions

Product Warehouse (Former Employee) –  Northampton, Northamptonshire12 February 2019
Culture okay, some management could be challenging but pay and rewards made up for this.

Otherwise it is a typical employer in terms of warehouse jobs.

Very orginized
Kitchen Designer (Current Employee) –  Weybridge11 February 2019
I have to be very organized to be able to keep on top. Generally very busy. Customer survey and drawings needs to be completed in a very short time. There is hardly any time for lunch. One day goes with daily surveys, drawings and pricing, customer calls, dealing with existing on going projects and problems accrues along the way.
Working as a team is the best outcome, but this does not hide the fact that you are always under constant pressure.
Pros
Team work
Cons
Long Hours

A typical example of the more you do, the more they expect!!!
Lead Kitchen Designer (Current Employee) –  Howdenshire7 January 2019
I have worked at Howdens for a number of years now and am currently looking elsewhere for employment. Promises of progression
that's have never been delivered. Constant focus on sales targets although figures are not commission based and everyone receives the same bonus which is a pittance anyway. We work a 5 and a half day week however never receive Saturdays off and these also have to be considered in your annual holiday allowance.

The positive side is that you are given free reign to an extent on how to do your job. The customers are for the most part great and you cant take work home for you so a 5 oclock finish means a 5 oclock finish.

Business Developer (Current Employee) –  Birmingham, West Midlands13 December 2018
There are many benefits to this company and the salary can be very good when sales are doing well.
Only problem is you rarely get a break and often have to deal with unhappy customers due to lack of stock or wrong orders being sent.
The staff are lovely although when sales are down it can be a very stressful workplace.
If you are a no nonsense person this job would be great for you.
