Hotel Chocolat, more like Hotel Horrible Management 🤔
Keyholder (Current Employee) –  Glasgow, Glasgow22 September 2019
There’s no time off from the job, with a facebook page constantly sending notifications from management, with the expectation to read and respond as soon as possible. Management have bullied many people out of the job, with little regard for mental health, managers will also chose their own personal friendships over the well being of their team. Staff are utterly expendable, with staff members who have worked for the company for many years being disregarded. Staff members are expected to pick up many of the managerial tasks, whilst not receiving extra pay, whilst managers receive promotions and pay rises. The job is incredibly fast paced and management never train up new starts, with the expectation of other staff members to train them, particularly on the cafe. If you’re wanting to apply as a christmas temp I would recommend against it, as the manager will constantly belittle you and talk behind your back that you don’t know how to do the job, despite them not training you up. Very little reward for what at sometimes can be a very stressful job. It’s a shame because the company it’s self is a good company to work for, fair pay, good discounts, good ethics, however this branch in particular has many issues, rooted in management.
Pros
free drinks, good discount

Not as good as it sounded
Sales assistant plus keyholder (Former Employee) –  Milton Keynes9 March 2018
Went to work their thinking I would get £8 an hour but very very rarely got this as they would only pay one keyholder per shift . Staff were very very chatty about each othe and not in a nice way about each othe which would make for an uncomfortable day. Sometimes did 10 hour shift with no break whilst other would sit upstairs for hours . Cleanliness of cafe had a lot to be desired .
Pros
It was a job
Cons
Just about everything else

Hotel Chocolat has been great
Keyholder Supervisor (Current Employee) –  Stratford, Greater London7 January 2017
The store has seen a dramatic change since I joined in 2015. The store has seen increasing sales and interest as a cocoa grower and a luxury company.
I have enjoyed learning and promoting the vast amount of products throughout all seasons, from Christmas to Halloween. There has been a huge demand of Vegan, Gluten free and Diabetic chocolate and HC caters to all of those needs and positive results.
Our store and team is small but very tight knit and flexible to shift swaps and call in's.

My recent appraisal concluded my strengths are product knowledge, Visual Marketing and being a key team motivator and I have aimed to polish up on my knowledge the business side of HC to eventually progress to more senior role in the company.
Pros
Staff Discount and Travel Paid when covering other stores
Cons
Zero Hour Contract

Fantastic team dynamic
Keyholder and Sales Assistant (Current Employee) –  Exeter9 December 2015
Though zero hour contracts have had bad press recently, as a student it is the ideal contract as the flexibility works with my studies. The team itself is a joy to work for, and the company appreciates its staff and rewards their hard work.

Not a typical cafe or coffee shop
Key Holder (Current Employee) –  York, ENG24 August 2015
Working at a Hotel Chocolat has been a great experience, not only do you get the opportunity to learn about all the different ways that chocolate and cacao can be used, you are encouraged to get involved a try it.The staff are great, everyone gets on really well, making working together during busy times easier. A typical day would be serving customers and making their drinks/food, keeping on top of cleaning and restocking retail. Towards the end of the shift there is set tasks that need to be completed for a close down. This really is a great place to work, especially for a weekend job.
