There was no rules about any of these that I was aware of but it wasn't advised that anything expensive was taken onto the shop floor as the store was unresponsible for any damage

Not immediately, they are suppose to do spot checks if they suspect anyone thieving from them. All till transactions are monitored via overhead CCTV and text copy of till till screen. You'd have to be really dumb to even try anything untoward.
