How to be a good prison officer

Perhaps the best course of action would be to allow officers to use reasonable force, rather than grilling them and causing them to become apprehensive about their actions. It's crucial for them to be in control, otherwise, they will become an easy target for prisoners. They're offenders, not children at a nursery school. They need to be kept in line, and while I believe mutual respect is important, some prisoners refuse to recognise that. Sometimes, it's necessary to be tough on them, so they know who is in charge. We can't tread lightly around them, hoping they'll behave themselves. Some of them are violent offenders, with no scruples. They don't care if you try to reason with them, they'll still try to dominate you. The bottom line is that the government really needs to address the issues listed here, by countless employees. These officers keep the wolves from the door, and they deserve to be treated with more consideration.

Very organised, but short of staff. Semi-millitary in managerial style, but with a strong sense of humour. Some fantastic managers, but not all can cope with the operational stresses. I am proud to have done it, but will never go back!
