Awful company to work for
Steward (Former Employee) –  Yorkshire21 January 2019
Long hours, low pay and absolutely horrible customers.

The company does not want employees it wants robots. You will be forced to adopt a customer service approach that does not work and angers customers. If you try to use your own initiative in any way you will be reprimanded.

Senior and middle managers do not spend any time working in front line roles (and most never have) but will demand you do your job in a manner that is inefficient, impractical, yields poor results and enrages your customers. Just 30 seconds observation of front of house staff would allow them to see that their ideas do not work. Any attempt to raise any issues always falls on deaf ears.

Staff are expected to meet ever increasing performance targets trying to sell a rapidly declining product. Many of their places are in embarrassingly bad condition but you are expected to squeeze every possible penny out of customers who more often than not feel ripped off.

Staff facilities are basically non existent, nowhere safe to keep coats and bags, toilets in damp, mouldy cupboards full of foliage and insects.

The customer more often than not act like absolute animals but the company refuses to give staff resources or take any action to crack down on anti-social behaviour even when it threatens staff and public safety.

If you are actually good at your job and surpass your targets managers will do everything in their power to ensure you never get any career progression whatsoever. They want to keep you where you are making money for them.

There is very much a clique culture that sees only those
more... who the managers consider their friends ever getting any career progression. Actually speaking your own mind or displaying any degree of personality or individuality is very much frowned upon and feeds a culture of bullying.

The uniform is an absolute joke, uncomfortable and not fit for purpose. Any attempts to wear anything "non-regulation" (such as wearing gloves when working outdoors in the winter) will see you reprimanded

Volunteer (Former Employee) –  Osborne, Isle of Wight26 September 2018
Relaxed but never lazy, a typical day at English Heritage was taken up with being a friendly guide to the tourists that visited the site. Educational and friendly.

Wonderful team, property management and environment.
Historic Property Steward (Former Employee) –  Falmouth16 August 2018
Great team and management of my particular property.

Team and Environment. Very flexible about hours. Loads of training.

Cons: Company moving to a corporate model of management - losing ethos nationally. Seasonal Pay and low promised hours.

Seasonal
Tour Guide (Former Employee) –  South West9 June 2018
Mainly employs people on short term seasonal contracts. The work environments are a bonus but the management drivel is appalling. Often people in change are so insipid as to offer no solutions or inventiveness to problems
Pros
Historic work environment

My favourite job
General Assistant, Estates Team (Former Employee) –  Northampton13 February 2018
I do miss working here, the environment was relaxed and friendly, we were a happy and productive team and we achieved a good deal of conservation and repairs to our unique collection of properties, every day was a different challenge and enjoyable. Like most large organisations it was a bit top heavy with management but they did respect the unions and worked with them on many occassions. I learnt a great deal about the historic build environment and the difficulties of keeping a good level of safety and compliance within the challenging constraints of Ancient Monument and Listed Building Consents.
Pros
Reasonable holiday allowance and terms and conditions
Cons
Difficulty to advance in administration roles

Very academic and professional team to work with. The work was varied and very interesting.
Buildings technical Manager (Former Employee) –  Birmingham, West Midlands10 October 2017
The day would deal with scheduled ancient monument documentation for repairs to historic buildings, a very meticulous and detailed process that required full concentration. The work involved elements of research that was very interesting. The management was very supportive and gave steer and clear vision to what the future goal of English Heritage is to achieve. The workplace culture operated through a micro management process, one that I was completely not used too however respect that the organisation requires excellence hence this arrangement. The hardest or should I say the most challenging part of the job was commuting into Birmingham where the train service was mostly unreliable getting too and from work. I enjoyed working with colleagues and learning different subjects that involved building conservation.
Pros
Excellent training provider

Long hours

Very admin heavy and meetings driven. A culture of whoever has been there longest gets to choose how things are done. A resistance to change. Lovely team feeling with a passion for history.

Enjoyable job but does have its down sides.
Visitor assistant (Former Employee) –  Cornwall12 September 2017
Despite the fairly repetitive role most days on the job are different due the delightful unexpectedness of customers. The training can be a bit hit and miss but there are always other members of staff happy to help you. Not a lot of room for job development and progression on site.
Pros
Some great colleagues, fantastic loctation.
Cons
Long days, toxic atmosphere.

Battle Abbey is a great place to work as the people are friendly and the surroundings are delightful. Having only worked there for a few months, I have already made many new aquaintences and friends from many different walks of life, some being students, some retired, but all with a passion for History and passing on their knowledge to the next generation.

Historic Property Steward (Former Employee) –  Amesbury, Wiltshire3 July 2017
Very busy location but I was never trained in the most productive job which meant there were times where I wasn't doing a lot so the days quite often went slowly. However, I enjoyed interacting with different people from all over the world although the hardest part was trying to provide information and inform visitors of certain rules when they didn't speak much English. The management team helped greatly when I asked them anything. I got to learn a lot about the history of Stonehenge and the surrounding area where I live.
Pros
Staff discount
Cons
working late with few visitors

Not as good as expected
Site Manager (Current Employee) –  Stonebridge28 June 2017
English Heritage is massivly over complicated and un-nessesarily over managed machine which is still seriously struggling with identity and purpose. There are stll several pockets of the old school government which need to leave before the charity can realky stretch its legs.
Pros
The people on your team
Cons
Wages, progression

Wpnderful Place Difficult System
Visitor Assistant (Former Employee) –  Downe12 June 2017
This was the best place I ever worked (Charles Darwin's Old Family Home). However the gap between the workers and head office was huge and unhelpful.

There were a lot of administrative hurdles to get over and actually being heard by the powers that be was very difficult. The English Heritage used to be a state department and therefore the amount of processes seemed outdated and over complicated.

My manger onsite and supervisors were fantastic and we had a great team. If you love history apply! But if you want to see quick changes implemented in a workplace I'd be very weary!
Pros
Great staff
Cons
Cumbersome style of leadership from head office.
