They ask for a satisfactory DBS clearance (formerly called CRB clearance) upon offering the job. It takes only a few minutes to complete the application and it takes a short while to receive clearance - anywhere between a day or two months - dependent on multiple addresses or name changes slowing the application down. Some schools will not allow anyone on site without a DBS clearance certificate and some will allow new staff to work under supervision of a manager without it until the clearance comes back. These certificates are refreshed every three years.
