Interesting work and smart people, unnecessary layers of management
Product Manager (Current Employee) –  London, Greater London7 February 2019
Pros:
Interesting and challenging job. Flexibility to do things in the way one sees fit.
Lots of smart colleagues.
Job flexibility.

Cons:
Management does not listen to the experts' opinion and keeps making mistakes as a result.
Too many managers and meetings, not enough people to do the hands on job.
Don't feel valued for the work I do, only contributions by senior staff get openly recognised.

Admin work and little chance to advance.

Not somewhere I'd work with a customer service background. For those with a procurement or legal background, it's a goldmine of upskilling, challenge, and development.

A lovely place to work with wonderful colleagues but little in the way of job satisfaction and engagement.

Awful senior management
Procurement Officer (Former Employee) –  Liverpool, Merseyside18 July 2017
Most Senior management ar CCS are awful. Bullying in this company from said management is rife. The last staff survey clearly identified this but nothing was done to correct it.

If your face does not fit you won't progress. If you don't agree with a suggestion from management you won't progress. If you dare to question any negative parts of the job you won't progress.

It is common knowledge amongst staff that certain managers fix interviews to have who 'they like' the salary scale is not a scale, you start on the baseline and only increase with the 1% annual gov pay rise.

While there are some very good managers at CCS they won't last as with all the good staff, they eventually get tired of the way it's ran and leave.

It's a shame the company don't REALLY listen to it's staff as maybe they could make it a positive place to work to do good for government savings. Instead it's an office full of people on power trips.
Pros
Flexi time - when allpwed to use it.
Cons
Many!

Crown Commercial Service, a work in progress
Category Manager (Former Employee) –  Westminster, Greater London12 April 2017
The Crown Commercial Service was formed from the Office of Government Commerce, and procurement teams from Whitehall departments. Every day was a challenge establishing procedures fit for purpose across central government. Managers were unsure how to deal with the change in structure and as a result it was not possible to implement and later even to suggest changes to the way we worked. The culture was not positive which is why I ultimately chose to leave.

I learned that people under stress uncertain of their future are poor long term decision makers. I learned how to manage expectations in customers by explaining to them step by step the processes that we would follow to meet their purchasing needs and by dissecting their requirements with them to evaluate the potential budget savings they could make at each stage.

The hardest thing was to work in an organisation that had no clear direction and to deliver year on year savings whilst costs for services were increasing.

I enjoyed learning in detail how government planned to deliver programmes that improved people's lives and communities, and helping to put those plans into practice by tendering contracts for the necessary goods and services.

working for the public sector

An enjoyable place to work which encourages personal growth and promotes training and a work/life balance
Commercial Specialist (Former Employee) –  London, Greater London20 March 2017
Delivered a managed service for the procurement of all contract requirements, goods and services as part of a niche team to HM Treasury and the Cabinet Office.

Supported a team within the departments procurement administrative functions, eg. publishing opportunities to tender for contracts through to awarded contracts on the governments 'Contract Finder' website.

Learned and further improved my awareness of frameworks, procurement policy and governance through regular training and refresher courses.

My direct managers were a pleasure to work for, always available to help and offer guidance, always encouraging.

Working for a niche team, each procurement was different which offered a variety of challenges and kept the working day both stimulating and enjoyable.
Pros
All the benefits of working for the Civil Service
Cons
A fixed term assignment

Terrible Senior Staff
Procurement Advisor (Current Employee) –  National14 August 2015
There is a culture of arrogance and outcasting common amongst senior members of staff who have no idea on how to manage generation Y colleagues.

You get a strong sense of wanting you to stay at the same level and there is a lot of reneging on promises of learning and development here.

A lot of the Contractors/Interims here are friends of the senior staff members who you find are creating all this vacancies for their friends.

The flexi time is good so allows you to tailor your working pattern to your home or social life.
Pros
Flexi Time
Cons
Terrible Office Politics.
