Technician (Former Employee) –  Leeds, West Yorkshire30 June 2017
Very busy work environment.
I wouldn't recommend staying here for any length of time as I think it would be difficult to move on due to the narrow range of the work. Many staff seem to spend much time trying to get others into trouble and this seems supported by the management. Culture therefore can be oppressive and borders on bullying.
It would be much better if managers were all appointed who were personable, knowledgeable, bright and effective .....ie people you would wish to be around.
Pros
good canteen
Cons
ineffective and demoralizing managers

Horrendous place to work
N / A (Current Employee) –  Harrogate, North Yorkshire12 April 2017
If you are a hard worker, with good ethics and aspirations, run as fast as you can in the opposite direction. Working here will wear you down until you are a shell of your former self; management openly say that they don't care who does the work, as long as it gets done. So if you are the fortunate few who can show up late, go for long lunches and leave early, you will enjoy: for the rest, long days, unpaid overtime and no breaks will be your life. And don't even bother with HR and Management; they don't follow the policies so you are on your own, until you realise the grass is most definitely greener.
Pros
Good canteen, free exercise classes
Cons
Unpaid (and forced) overtime, no support, poor holiday allowance, poor company overall

They hire a lot of new graduates without experience which is great, but the pay is pretty low for the amount expected from you and the advancement is pretty much nonexistent.
Pros
Decent employee benefits
Cons
Low wage, long hours, stressful work, little advancement

Disabled employees beware. Poor HR and bad management
Lab Technician (Current Employee) –  Leeds, West Yorkshire8 March 2017
Disability discrimination. Bullying in the workplace. HR not caring for employees unless 100% fit and never ill. If this doesnt show you what the work environment is like I dont know what will. HR will bully you and make you feel bad for going to hospital if you need to, they will put you on observations unnecessarily and will protect their long term employees at all costs, to the detriment of new employees. Even if old employees are lying and backstabbing.
Avoid this company if you want to be a healthy happy individual. This company will make you stressed beyond belief and then wonder why its employees are off sick.
Pros
Decent training

Disability discrimination

Security Access Manager/Infrastructure Team Leader (Former Employee) –  Global9 February 2017
Covance was a great place to work and pay very well and as such they demand excellence which is no bad thing. This can seem daunting at first however once you get your head around the idea that the are paying a premium salary in order to receive a premium service from you, then it all makes sense. I would heartily recommend working here, if for no other reason than for the self improvement you will inevitably go through.

Bad Management and very poor training terrible work life balance
Senior Drug Safety Associate (Former Employee) –  Maidenhead7 January 2017
regularly have to work non paid overtime due to extreme high workload which must be completed before end of day before you can finish. Majority of staff work through their breaks and lunch to meet unrealistic targets and even work throug conference call meetings as so busy. Given far too much workload with very little training if any all online and expected to work everything out independently. The management have no time for your training needs or for support and also far too busy to even notice you never mind mentor you.Underpaid for level of hours have to put in. Stressful culture where everyone is overworked and worried do to their own targets. Foreign managers with poor English, lack of HR sensitivity or professionalism in weekly one to ones. Only good to gain experience in short term and leave for something better.

long hours, bad work life balance, lack of support and training

Complete lack of Work/Life Balance
Laboratory Technician (Current Employee) –  Harrogate21 July 2016
The department has been seriously understaffed for many years. The inability to accurately forecast and plan the daily workload has resulted in staff essentially being held hostage for up to two hours after normal finish time, the mentality amongst management being that nobody can leave until all the work is done, or until given permission. Mandatory overtime in excess of 50 hours a month makes a mockery of the work/life balance the company claims to promote. Staff is treated poorly and are expected to routinely skip breaks or cut breaks short to manage the workload. Staff turnover has been absolutely insane and no attempt has been made to retain experienced staff. Management lacks people skills and appear to have been promoted as a consequence of incompetence at the previous level rather than actually possessing any sort of management qualities.

On the plus side, for those new to the industry, the company does offer the opportunity to learn a lot in a very short time. There is also always extra overtime available for those who want to top up their earnings.

Excellent place to work if you are prepared to work hard. Slackers need not apply.
Manager (Former Employee) –  Harrogate18 May 2015
A lot of folks are putting Covance down in these reviews, I can only assume they did not meet the company expectations as this place is great to work for as long as you are prepared to work hard and accurately. Yes they are aggressive and yes they demand only the best from their employees, but they deliver a highest quality service and pay salaries above the norm to ensure they keep the right people. There is a good matrixed management structure so if you know how to make use of that, then you will get recognition where it is deserved. Fully recommended.

A lovely place to work in
Clinical Trial Associate (Former Employee) –  Crawley26 January 2015
Transitioning of study documents to a new shared location.

Different clinical trial systems

Responsible for setting new starters IT equipment up and manage my studies.

Worked well in a team and independently and lucky to have very cooperative colleagues.

Transitioning of studies to different location as the deadline given by study manager would not be possible so I had to give a detail explanation of what the job entails and this was appreciated by study manager and a sensible deadline was made which was met.

Covance values her employees.

Bad management, lack of breaks, expected to do unpaid overtime, no thanks or recognition
Technician (Current Employee) –  UK3 June 2013
As above really.

All management care about is money not the staff. As a result there is a very high staff turnover and the staff are mainly graduates using it to gain experience and go on to better things. Few staff over 25 years of age which is telling in itself.

Lab work often over runs do to lack of organisation, lab staff are expected to forgo breaks and lunches as well as often staying late but are not paid overtime as "It should be possible to complete the work in the time allowed" except that it is not and management are fully aware of this.

Individual staff members are mostly nice, some are very obviously trying to get to the top and will happily trample on you to get there. That said it is excellent experience for the CV if you work there and move on quickly.

Pros
Decent canteen and company benefits. Shame about the pay.
Cons
Long hours
