It's hard to summarise working for Costco as you will have a different experience to others depending on which department you work for.

For most, the departments are difficult to work in because of similar reoccurring problems such as short staff and reduced hours which leads to low employee morale.

There are many managers in each warehouse and whilst not all of them are 'bad', there certainly are a lot that lack in basic people skills and some are often promoted into management just because of out-of-work relationships etc.

If you choose to work there whilst you study, or just for 1-2 years then your experience will be okay, depending on the dept. However if you join wanting to progress and make a career, you should note that most are promoted through 2 ways: Working in every department (Especially the shop floor) and/or becoming friends with one or more of the managers.

When joining the best advice would be to keep hold of your Employee handbook and study it carefully, and make sure it applies to employment law.

Management can use the book against you for whatever reason and having knowledge of the handbook and basic employment law can help defend yourself.

Hardest part of the job is simply this:

People can be very difficult and incredibly stupid.
Pros
Hourly pay rate, staff members
Cons
Bleak working conditions, management behaviour and conduct, difficult customers

Great people to work with. There's a lot of autonomy given and there is also opportunity to shine. One of the main skills required is customer service.

Costco has a rigid work shift. Early, afternoon and late shift. You work any 5 days out of the seven. This means you could work a Saturday or a Sunday and have a day off in the week. It is not possible to work extra hours on your daily shift. To earn extra you must work an extra day.

definitely a dog eat dog culture, if you wanted to get promoted you had to abandon any working relationships. also a place where you would do well if your face fit. work life balance didn't exist, long hours with no gratitude. if you clocked in a minute too early or a minute too late you would get a disciplinary. floor staff working in the clothing section would be expected to continuously fold clothes.....sometimes staff would unfold and refold clothes to make them look busy otherwise they would get in trouble. stock take would be after a 9 hour shift. starting after closing time - sometimes meaning that we would be there till past midnight and expected in the next day!

You have to be self motivated with good time management skills. There is a supportive infrastructure and 'open door policy' for any problems that are encountered. The hardest part of the job is the working hours and maintaining a work life balance

Supervisors tended to do favours for their favourites. This would generally end up in breaks being given too soon after the start of shift.

Less time given on developments of staff that they aren't favourable of which is a shame.

as like most jobs there are people you will like and dislike but you will get on with most here.

Only downside to the place is you would be lucky if you ever see yourself get promoted at the follow a years pay rise system everyone works toward and they make sure you dont get enough hours in a week to reach that goal.

Very rewarding place to work. Nice staff, friendly customer. Learned a lot about food safety. Left due to there not being enough hours for the amount of staff.

Costco is an extremely fast-paced environment at times, however they pay very well. They have opportunities to help you progress, for when opportunities come up.
