PROJECT MANAGER (Current Employee) – Liverpool – 1 August 2019
Project Manager typically manages 5+ projects with typical value from £600K to £10 Million across UK, Ireland. You are expected to be fully committed to each project regardless of your workload, possibly handling multiple technical and financial challenges at any one time.
On the one hand you have full responsibility for a project, but at any one time you could be overruled by your Senior Project Manager, or they object to your plan of action and tell you to hold and discuss before you can make the decision. However come time to actually make that decision you cannot get hold of them to discuss so you end up making the decision you were originally going make before they objected.
A Mechanical Engineer and Electrical Engineer is assigned to each project the PM manages they also are working on multiple projects at the same time. Can be a challenge with design deliverables deadlines when your Engineer is working on another project.
PM is responsible for all customer facing activities, producing Programmes, attending design reviews, progress review meetings, selecting internal site based Project Engineer to manage day to day installation of each project.
You could be one site, having an update with your project engineer and at the same time handling calls from another project and directing engineering resource on another project.
You are expected to travel to each site periodically, which can involve an amount of driving but you are still expected to respond to emails and telephone calls regardless of your travel commitments.
Engineering teams are very good, dependingmore... on which engineer you are assigned, some however fall into the mindset that its nothing to do with them and say its a project issue whilst quite clearly of their making.
PM is also responsible for selecting all equipment vendors for balance of plant supply as well as installation contractors (mechanical, electrical, civil if required, logistics, lift and shift companies).
PM is raises purchase order requisition of all components required on each project.
Full responsibility for managing budgets, raising contract documentation including variations, extension of time etc. and all other contract management activities.
On the whole a good company to work for, however stress levels can be high as you are ultimately responsible for every aspect of job.
Resource levels become an issue when a technical issue is present, and some engineers think it's up to the PM to fix the technical issue even it's of the engineers making. Sometime multiple problems crop up and the snow ball and can be a challenge to close them out especially at the end of the project when you loose the assigned labour as they are due on another project for another PM.
PM is also responsible for obtaining Commissioning Engineer Resource.less
Service Engineer (Former Employee) – Midlands mines – 10 October 2019
I served for over 16 years and these were the best years of work. I only left as the call out was getting to much for my liking. The work colleagues are very much there to help each other and don’t leave people struggling with their work
