Was a nice place to work but could be going downhill
ADME Scientific Assistant (Former Employee) –  Great Chesterford, Essex10 April 2019
Nice place to work but drive towards efficiency is a drive away from a nice atmosphere.

Very friendly atmosphere with a lot of people willing to help, however the work demand prevented a lot of development

Cleaner full time (Former Employee) –  Tranent, East Lothian28 March 2019
Very busy place with too little stuff, in results a day of work there is exhausting. The management is well organised and as well as the rest of people I've worked with there are great, friendly and helpful individuals. The hardest part of my work experience at Charles River was the amount of daily work, i often had to cut my breaks short and stay longer just to keep up. After a typical day at work my energy levels were drained.
Pros
"realistic minimum wage"
Cons
physically exhausting

Challenging with a steep learning curve, but long hours and not much work life balance
Senior Scientist (Former Employee) –  Woburn MA4 February 2019
Interesting projects and smart people. Opportunity to learn a lot. Too many projects and not enough staff made for a stressful environment with high turnover.
Pros
diversity of projects and opportunities to learn
Cons
long hours

Assistant Scientist (Current Employee) –  Edinburgh, City of Edinburgh26 November 2018
The actual content of the work isn't too strenuous but the volume of work can be overwhelming and the large amounts of analysis to be complete in such a short time with minimal help isn't great.

Long days and no thanks
Animal Technician (Former Employee) –  edinburgh18 June 2018
Over 14 hour days and expected to work 7 days in a row. No thanks for staying late or arriving early. Mentally and physically exhausted and no time for a family life. Only good thing was the money but you work to live not live to work!!!! CEO wonders why he has such a massive turnover and wants his colleagues to have a work life balance!!! Never going to happen.
Pros
money and creds (money off website)
Cons
Long hours, mental exhaustion

Worked there for 3+ years. Fast paced, interesting work environment. Ended up being stuck in a technical job with no advancement and no extra support with a workload that doubled.

Lovely people

Poor progression, poor pay

Placement Student (Former Employee) –  Tranent19 July 2017
Undergraduate placement student doing a degree in Biology. Department worked almost solely in Chemistry so it wasn't what I was looking for. May be better for chemistry/Biochemistry students.

Placement Student (Former Employee) –  Tranent19 July 2017
Better for Chemistry/Biochemistry graduates. Did the placement as a Biology undergraduate and didn't feel like it was exactly what I was looking for. May have been better in a department which was not solely Chemistry.

overstretched
Project Coordinator (Current Employee) –  Edinburgh City, City of Edinburgh17 June 2017
Work on average 9 hours overtime a week as we are understaffed and under resourced. I have learned many skills but the lack of progression after 2 years is why i intend to move on. The management are largely anonymous and unaware of the lack of resource.
Cons
low salary, no recognition for additional effort, no career progression

Advise against working here
licensed technician (Former Employee) –  Manston, Kent11 June 2017
The animal work itself is not bad, however the workload is unachievable without the excessive overtime which you have no option but to do and often without notice. Workplace culture is one of blame and hostility as the constant time shortages lead to mistakes and shortcuts; not an environment to strive for high standards of animal welfare (as the company say they do).
Middle management have little respect or appreciation for employees; there is also a lack of diversity, respect for other cultures/races and equal opportunities as most longer-term employees have rarely ventured out of Thanet.
Pay is minimal for this industry and for science graduate roles which is probably a factor in the revolving door of high staff turnover. Some days you are expected to work without a break for 6-8 hours.
Pros
Colleagues are mostly friendly and decent
Cons
Poor pay, conditions, treatment and hours

Senior Assistant Scientist (Current Employee) –  Tranent12 May 2016
The path of progression is too rigid. No matter what you do and how well you perform you need to wait until the set amount of time passes before you can progress.

Interesting Job
Deputy Group Leader (Current Employee) –  Margate25 February 2016
Due to the nature of the job I can not really go too much into detail unfortunately. It has been a interesting career for the last 8 years and I have learnt so much in regards to Animal husbandry. New company legislation on PPE has unfortunately left the job very undesirable as the uniform for working in barrier rooms is restricting due to the high levels required for bio-security.
