Meals and More - our registered charity!
About Meals & More...
Why is Meals & More important?
According to latest figures from the Child Poverty Action Group, over 4m children in the UK are living in poverty. That children should still be going hungry in the 21st century, and in one of the richest countries on the planet, is nothing short of outrageous.
Brakes aims to alleviate holiday hunger for these children in the most deprived areas of the UK - facilitating holiday provision clubs through funding and partnership with local providers.
What is Meals & More ?
Meals & More tackles holiday hunger and social isolation suffered by children who have access to free school meals during term time, but for whom there is no sponsored food provision during school holidays. We support children with nutritious food, activities and a safe environment for children aged 2-18 to attend, in areas of most need.
How does it work?
We work with delivery partners (the charitable organisations on the ground who run these clubs) and supplier supporters, who help fund the clubs and offer in-kind support like free stock and cooking classes (we are planning to extend this to our customers late this year).
The programme has been operational for two and a half years and has gained significant momentum and support, quadrupling in size in just a year from 2016, feeding over 9,000 children and providing over 100,000 meals through 154 clubs during 2017. We are ahead of target in terms of number of clubs, and well on the way to our overall goal of reaching 25,000 children.
We are evaluating the programme through a supported PhD, in partnership with the Northumbria University. The research findings add credibility to our position and drive considerable interest from industry, parliament and other stakeholders, and it’s an essential pillar of the programme, that requires considerable support.

FOODSERVICE SUPPLIER OF THE YEAR! There is no better foodservice supplier to work for!
We took home the coveted Foodservice Supplier of the Year as we swept the board with 11 other awards at the Quality Food and Drink Awards for Foodservice.
The success at the Awards reflects our focus on food innovation and product development, which paid dividends as we took the top slot in 11 food categories including meat & poultry and deli.
‘Our focus puts the customer first, so it was fantastic to win so many awards, not just for our food but also as the Foodservice Supplier of the Year. This recognises the work that we have undertaken across the business to improve the customer experience, including: launching a new website, upgrading logistics, improving our sustainability credentials, and investing in new facilities and technology, all of which have been done with the support of parent company Sysco,' says Sarah Hartley, Head of Food & Brand. ‘The awards that we received for our products are a great endorsement of the time and effort we put into creating great tasting, on-trend food that our customers can use across their menus.'
In addition to the Supplier of the Year, we won a further 11 product categories as well as being highly commended in six and commended in a further five, across categories including: bakery, meal solutions, dairy, deli, grocery, fish and seafood, desserts, grocery, and meat and poultry.
