Business Systems Manger- Overview

Salary: Up to £75,000 + bonus & benefits

Location: Staines (TW18 3BY), (travel to UK wide sites will be expected )

The Business Systems Manager is a key management position representing British Gas IS within one or more specific business areas, in this case British Gas Services. The role oversees and is accountable for the full range of IS services supplied to our business, from strategy to operations. The BSM is a key force in leading the IS change agenda worth circa. £250M across British Gas. The role uniquely represents the integrated IS capability, and all activities are executed in partnership with the respective business and IS teams.

The purpose of the role is to ensure that British Gas IS provides efficient and effective technology services to enable the successful delivery of the British Gas business strategy.

Job Outline & Challenges

The Business Systems Manager will support the Lead BSM in delivering in the following key areas:

Strategy

Drive the IS strategy, supporting and aligning with the business area strategy

Articulate and explain the business area strategy to IS stakeholders

Articulate and explain the IS strategy to business stakeholders

Develop and manage the three year plan for each business area

Define the ‘building blocks’ or projects to deliver the plan

Collaborate in defining priorities for each business area

Filter and triage new ideas

Change

Drive the current year change plan across each business area

Initiate projects and ensure successfully moved into change lifecycle

Manage changes to the current year plan

Support project managers and sponsors to achieve successful delivery

Manage recovery efforts when projects go wrong

Ensure benefits are delivered and maximised by the business

Support the management and delivery of the change plan as a whole

Service

Ensure architecture supporting each business service is understood

Promote accurate and consistent performance reporting

Flush out planned business changes to give early visibility, eg increase in users

Drive ‘get well’ plans to improve performance#

Ensure clear ownership of incident communication responsibilities

Work with Client Services to reduce incidents and unplanned outages

Lead regular service reviews

Stakeholder Engagement

Plan and manage overall stakeholder engagement

Coordinate effective communication and engagement with senior stakeholders

Provide ‘single point of contact’ between IS and the business area

Act as point of escalation and resolve issues with support from ISLT

Lead engagement of ISLT with senior stakeholders

Actively promote knowledge sharing between IS and business teams

Drive continual improvement in business satisfaction with services provided by IS Governance

Ensure effective governance in each of the above areas

Ensure roles and responsibilities of functions and individuals in IS are understood

Assist business colleagues in making best use of IS capabilities and services

Identify control weaknesses and ensure adequate remedies are implemented

Other general challenges

Articulate complex issues in simple terms (both verbally and in writing), building understanding to gain business buy-in

Challenge ideas constructively and guard against overly-tactical / short-term solutions

Lead & facilitate requirements workshops with broad range of stakeholders

Develop accurate business models including process, data and organisation

Identify and propose areas for business improvement

Contribute technical perspectives in the development of robust business cases

Promote financial stewardship of the technology environment, focusing on maximising value delivery for each change initiative

Manage extended IS team to establish service levels for new or amended solutions

Advise on the potential impact and risks of business changes

Monitor technology developments and trends (including personal research and engagement). Attend external network events and seminars where appropriate.

Actively engage departments across IS to ensure alignment around IS strategy, change, operations and governance activities

Business Systems Manager - Person Specification

Sound understanding and knowledge of the relevant business area

Proven experience of introducing significant process and system change

Experienced in investment appraisal, business cases and benefits tracking

Very strong verbal and written communication skills

Skilled in influencing, negotiation and mediation

Concerted team player, emphasising collective achievement within her/his team and their peer network

Appreciation of corporate standards, including architectural roadmaps

Experienced in governance, project management, and assurance.

Experienced in process and workflow mapping

Strong working knowledge of SDLC and the full change lifecycle model

Experience in personally leading and delivering multiple small change initiatives

Technical Competencies

Identifying and managing value and investment appraisal techniques

Experience of requirements capture methodologies

Appreciation of business and technical architecture and design

Expert in change management methodologies

Skilled in project planning, project management and risk mitigation

Ability to use process modelling techniques

Understanding of PRINCE methodology

Day-to-day use of Microsoft Office and other similar packages e.g. Excel, Word, Visio, Project & PowerPoint
