The Type 26 Global Combat Ship will be the backbone of the Royal Navy for decades to come. It is designed to be adaptable and easily upgraded, reacting to threats as they change.
With a basic displacement of around 5,400 tonnes, the Type 26 will be around 148m in length (the equivalent of around 15 double decker buses), and one of the most advanced vessels in the Royal Navy's fleet. It is expected to feature: vertical missile silos capable of housing a range of different weapons; a Medium Calibre gun; a hangar to accommodate a Merlin or Wildcat Helicopters and a Flexible Mission Space for Unmanned Air, surface and underwater Vehicles, or additional boats; and the most advanced sensors available to the fleet
The latest designs have been released here , and we're looking for an Engineering Manager to join the team and help take the programme to the next stages.
As an Engineering Manager, Power and Propulsion Integration you'll not only be leading and managing a multi-disciplinary team of engineers in a multi-project environment, but also be the technical authority for power and propulsion systems within the area.
You'll be instrumental in developing warship power and propulsion systems that will attract and delight customers, as such your ability to agree requirements and ultimately gain acceptance of the final product will be important.
As an Engineering Manager, Power & Propulsion Integration your main responsibilities will involve:
The discharge for Technical Authority over power and propulsions systems and for their related product safety.
Delivering the Power & Propulsion outputs, and the wider project milestones, on schedule and to budget.
Monitoring and reporting on progress against the plan, implementing recovery action, as necessary, to mitigate any anticipated slippage.
The coaching, development and motivation of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers in order to maximise their potential and develop a recognised company capability in power & propulsion systems.
The quality of design deliverables.
As an Engineering Manager, Power & Propulsion Integration your skills and qualifications will ideally include:
Degree qualified or equivalent, ideally with a post graduate qualification in a related mechanical, electrical or marine engineering subject
Registration as a chartered engineer (CEng) would be a distinct advantage
As would Membership or Fellowship of a recognised engineering Institution or Institute.
Knowledge of, and demonstrable experience in the specification, selection, procurement, integration, manufacture, installation and operation of power & propulsion systems including:
A demonstrable track record in ship design and development is required as you may be called upon to act as a design review assessor in this field of expertise.
- Engine prime movers, including intake & exhaust systems;
- Mechanical transmission systems, including gearing and shafting;
- Steering and stabilising systems;
- Variable speed electric drive propulsion motors;
- HV & LV power generation systems;
- HV & LV power distribution systems;
- Electrical power management systems.
An understanding of the transversal factors influencing propulsion system design including underwater radiated noise, shock, survivability, operability, reliability, availability, human factors, design for support, etc. will be required.
What we're looking for in you
The Engineering Manager, Power & Propulsion Integration will operate at a senior and influential level leading a multi-disciplinary team that will have a high degree of interaction between BAE Systems and the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the prime customer, and its wider Naval stakeholders; as such a personable style and good communication coupled with practiced negotiating skills will be required to discharge the role effectively whilst maintaining strong and effective working relationships with all parties. The ability to drive the work forward in a spirit of consensus will be key.
