Job Role:
Working within a multi disciplinary team, providing the biochemical engineering input on a number of projects, primarily involving the development of small-scale bioreactor systems.
Job Purpose:
The development and testing of new technologies and new automated systems, particularly around bio-processing and tissue engineering/regenerative medicine
To lead the biochemical engineering development content of complex automated systems.
To work within teams of mechanical, electrical, software engineers, business development and technology experts to ensure that the system design meets the essential requirements for commercial success.
To contribute towards the production engineering and cost reduction of existing and emerging products and ensure the designs meet the requirements for a successful product release.
Key Job Accountabilities:
To provide a lead in the biochemical engineering design and development on new and existing products
To arrange, participate in, or facilitate design reviews with peers and others
Experiment planning (the design of new experiments and test procedures), experiment execution and analysis of results
Sourcing and preparation of materials for testing the company’s new technologies and automated systems
Culture of mammalian and microbial cells, and running biochemical assays
Preparation of data and reports
Visits to partner sites to collaborate with partner researchers and to conduct trials
To ensure that cost and quality targets are achieved within agreed timescales
To ensure an effective hand over to the products group and a successful production release
Education/Qualifications/Special Training
PhD or equivalent experience in Chemical/Biochemical/Biological Engineering
Experience
Candidates are likely to have some experience of successfully developing complex systems / scientific instruments for low to medium volume manufacture (from one offs to up to 100 units a year)
Core competencies should be:
cell culture in bioreactors, with mammalian and/or microbial cells
experiment design, execution and analysis
culture of mammalian cells and general aseptic handling techniques
systems engineering (some experience of prototyping systems containing hardware, electronics and software for lifescience / biological / laboratory based applications).
