The Royal Derby Hospital, as part of the Derby Hospitals Foundation Trust, is seeking a Specialty Doctor to provide clinical service in the Emergency Department.

The post is for a fixed term of 12 months.

The successful applicant will work 9 clinical sessions per week based in the Emergency Department and have 1 session for supporting activity, study etc. The post is particularly suited to doctors who require time and experience to help get MCEM B/C exam and/or prepare for ST4 application, and the appointee will be actively supported in achieving their aims through structured supervision. Our department enjoys a very strong reputation and track record for training and supporting doctors in passing their exam and gaining training posts. The post is also suitable for doctors wishing to remain in Emergency Medicine and have a flexible Job Plan.

Our ED strives for excellence in clinical shop floor work, led through example by a team of hands-on Consultants. The ED has 24/7 Middle Grade clinical cover and extended Consultant cover to 10pm weekdays and through the weekend.

The Emergency Department currently sees around 90,000 new cases per year and has a 6-bed short-stay Emergency Ward. We currently have 9 (8.6 WTE) substantive Consultants, 1 Locum Consultant and 2 Associate Specialists. We have 5 SpR/ST4+ and 2 CT3s. There are 7 Specialty Doctors, 11 F2, CT1/2s & GPVTSs and 3 F1s.

We have a progressive nursing establishment led by a Head of Nursing and supported by a Matron, Nurse Educators, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Practitioners.

We work closely with the adjacent CED to provide care for c. 25,000 children p.a, providing 24/7 on-call clinical support to CED as well as AED.

Our purpose-built new Emergency Department builds on our existing experience and embraces new ways of managing patient flows with imaginative use of all disciplines of health professionals. We work as a co-ordinated, friendly team supported by a progressive IT strategy. The ED is supported by close links to the acute specialties and is located adjacent to CT/Imaging as well as the Acute Assessment Units.
