No other organisation in the UK does what we do. Tasked with maintaining the UK's nuclear deterrent and supporting national nuclear security, AWE operates one of the nation's largest high technology research and development facilities. Our scientific and engineering expertise is second to none. As is the groundbreaking approach that allows us to predict the performance of a system that can never be tested, but has to work. You'll work with this pioneering methodology alongside other science, engineering and
technology specialists, when you generate the concepts, design records and production
definitions for a specific Trident sub-system and system. Producing all the sub-assembly and component designs, you'll then come up with testing plans that assess how well your solutions will work in practice. But qualifying a design for service is just the beginning. From there, you'll go on to the in-service phase, which involves:
ongoing assessments of warhead safety and performance
providing expert support to the users of the warhead and its systems in the field
specifying, assessing, verifying and introducing required system modifications.
And at every stage, you'll liaise between the design authority team and production so that
processes can be swiftly approved and where necessary, amended. You'll be designing a solution, not just a component, so problem-solving skills are essential. Whether you come to us from a mechanical, electrical materials or systems engineering background, you'll need a good knowledge of engineering design, including materials selection. Also vital is the ability to put your points across to a wide range of specialists - both in reports and in person. If you already have experience of energetic or radioactive components, so much the better.
As well as the opportunity to continually develop your abilities, you'll enjoy a superb benefits package. One that includes 28 days' holiday in addition to statutory bank holidays.
