A number of the systems used, developed and supported by HP on the Log NEC Account use INGRES database systems as their data stores. The primary function of this role is to support the INGRES database instances on production systems.

Monitor the INGRES database log files for significant or recurring errors, and investigate where appropriate.

Monitor the database instances for performance issues or inefficiencies, and investigate where appropriate.

Monitor the size of databases for capacity planning purposes.

Install and tune INGRES database instances as required.

Ensure that database snapshots are taken appropriately.

Ensure that INGRES database information is backed up appropriately.

Ensure that relevant data is replicated where required.

Housekeeping of the INGRES databases.

Automate regular tasks where appropriate.

Liaise with the supplier of the INGRES database software regarding technical support issues.

Assist development teams in the design of logical and physical data models. Review all data models before coding of the related applications begins.

Assist with the creation and population of databases for Unit and System test.

Provide assessments for changes and input to bids for INGRES database Applications and Systems.

Investigate and resolve assigned Incidents. Investigate and fix assigned problems.

Maintain documentation as required.


Experience supporting INGRES databases in a Database Administrator role.

Should have experience of supporting INGRES databases on a UNIX or LINUX platform.

Able to write scripts for a UNIX platform.

Must be able and willing to become Security Cleared if SC is not held.

Must be willing and able to work on an extended day rota between the hours of 0700 until 1900 Monday to Friday.

May be required to go onto an out of hours support rota.

A good understanding of networking.

An understanding of SAN technology.

A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office software.

Oracle Database Administration.

LINUX / UNIX Administration.

Report writing.

Knowledge of and practical experience of working to ITIL V3 processes.

Change management and process improvement skills.
