The key role of an Assistant Surveyor is to support the Utility Surveyor and Utility Consultants by:
Receiving briefings from Utility Surveyor and Utility Consultants on scope of work and timescales
helping to prepare projects for survey in order to meet clients timescales and requirements
? identifying key contacts and organisations
? assisting with investigative, non-destructive utility plant surveys using the latest detection technology
? interpreting existing utility information plans
? assisting with, preparing and issuing CAD Drawings
? chasing outstanding information / drawings and implementing follow-up actions as appropriate.
Key Responsibilities
Key Tasks
Prepare projects for survey in order to meet clients timescales and requirements.
Receive briefings, with support documentation, e.g. ordnances, to understand scope of work and timescales.
Prepare for survey by - copying drawings, arranging site access, desk research, any project monitoring documentation.
Carry out or read and understand Health & Safety Risk Assessments prior to site visits.
Identify key contacts and organisations.
Contribute to maintenance of an effective and up to date contact database.
Undertake utility plant surveys.
Check that the correct junction has been located before commencing survey.
Assist with photographing the survey area and sequential marking of the utility plant (for example water, gas, electric, BT, CATV and others) on largest scale drawing. It is essential that all pavement / highway utility covers, surface services and location references are clearly captured photographically and recorded.
Note any schools or emergency services stations opening onto the survey area.
Comply with Health & Safety requirements.
Site Mark-Out.
If required, assist with mark out on the ground of the survey findings. Appropriate colour coding will be used and details of route and depth will be marked.
Prepare Drawings.
Receive, print and file Drawings.
Prepare Drawings (Existing Services, Combined Services, Internal Distribution and Utility Identification) within agreed timescales, ensuring correct use of preferred line styles and title block.
Update supporting project documentation e.g. received drawings register.
Liaise with Clients, Architects, Engineers and other consultants and negotiate responses from Statutory Authorities.
Use a variety of media e.g. telephone, email and fax to request action and/or information.
Establish a working relationship with project Design Team and Statutory Authorities.
Record actions on project support documentation.
Chase responses and implement follow up
Answer telephone calls.
Process incoming project post

Keep Associate Utility Surveyor and Utility Consultants informed of progress.
Escalate issues both internally and externally as required.
Issue approved Drawings.
Seek approval of Drawings.
Prepare drawings for issue.
Issue required number of Drawings in appropriate format e.g. by email, hardcopy or CD Rom.
Update supporting project documentation e.g. issued drawings register.
Prepare programmes, progress reports and status summaries.
Attend weekly Project Review Meetings with relevant staff to review progress/status and prioritisation of projects.
Operating Procedures.
Contribute to and operate at all times in accordance with the Management System.
Additional Responsibilities
Tasks
Ad-hoc requests.
This role will include a variety of other reasonable administrative duties as may be required from time to time to support both the company’s business objectives , e.g. answering telephone, photocopying and folding plans, filing and archiving of project documentation.
The job holder may also be required to undertake Utility Site Investigations.

Desired Skills

NRSWA Trained
All surveys must be carried out by a person who is NRSWA accredited.
Use of RD, GPR equipment
The job holder must hold a certificate for safe and correct operation of RD & GPR equipment.
First Aid
The job holder will be trained to Appointed Person level in First Aid.
CSCS accredited
The job holder will be required to pass a CSCS test and hold a relevant card.

The ideal applicant will:
have a background in the civils / surveying sector or utility company experience with an understanding of Utility Plant and ordnance extracts
have a valid New Roads and Street Works (NRSWA) accreditation although training will be provided if not.
have experience in marking out and mapping surveys, and undertaking and writing utility plant risk assessments
previous experience in the use of Radio and Ground Probing Radar detection equipment would be ideal, although training will be provided as necessary
be proficient in CAD (we use AutoCAD LT) or have an understanding of CAD (training will be provided as necessary)
have good organisational skills to ensure that deadlines are achieved
be hardworking, self-motivated and able to work on own initiative
have a focussed attention to detail
have good communication skills, both verbal and written
have general PC / email skills including MS Outlook, Word and Excel
be a team player, who can make a valuable contribution to the success of the business
be physically fit
be willing to travel and stay overnight if required
hold a current UK driving license.

Salary and Benefits
Remuneration and Hours of Work
1. Remuneration
The salary is subject to negotiation, but will be within the range of depending upon qualifications, technical ability and experience.
2. Hours of Work
Normal working hours will be from 08:45 to 17.00, Monday to Friday including a 45 minute lunch break. However, to fulfil the role of Assistant Surveyor it is expected that you will work closely with the Utility Surveyor and Utility Consultants to the demands of the tasks you are responsible for, exceeding these hours as necessary.
Holiday Entitlement
1. Holiday Year
The holiday year commences on the 1st day of the employee’s birth month and ends on the last day of the month 12 months later.
2. Holiday Entitlement
During each full year of service your holiday entitlement with basic pay in addition to public holidays will be 23 working days per year.
Pension
The Company does not operate a contributory Pension Scheme but has appointed Norwich Union as its Stakeholder Pension Scheme provider.
Sharing in the Performance of the Company
Subject to both the Company and your own performance an annual discretionary bonus may be paid.
