Mencap is the voice of learning disability. Everything we do is about valuing and supporting people with a learning disability, and their families and carers. The Co-operative has chosen Mencap and our sister charity ENABLE Scotland as its Charity of the year partners for 2011.
The money the Co-operative raise will be used to help 20,000 young people with a learning disability to transform their lives through a range of activities over 3 years. For Mencap progression mentoring is the provision of personal support, assistance, guidance, encouragement and inspiration to young people with a learning disability for a period of 3 - 6 months.
The main tasks will be regularly meet with their allocated young person, support young people with a learning disability to take positive next steps with their action plans, support young people with a learning disability to reflect, evaluate and recognise their learning and experience of their actions.
The skills required are commitment to the aims and values of Mencap and the ability to relate to and empathise with young people and their aspirations. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to be non-judgemental, self aware, patient and understanding. There will be induction to Mencap training and programme specific training which will be held on Tuesday 20th September 2011 in Sheffield. A CRB will be required for this opportunity.
