Personal Assistant – Job Description

The Care Project Ltd is an organisation dedicated to the care of adults with a learning disability. We provide personal support to a number of people in the local community enabling them to live independent and valued lives in their own home and supported living homes. Our staff continually work to provide care and support to improve the lives of those they have the privilege to work with.

We endeavour to ensure the support is right for the individual service user to enable them to reach their full potential, take advantage of opportunities and lead a full and satisfying life. We do this through personal support plans which focus on the individual and their welfare, needs, wishes and interests.

Our staff are passionate about working with the people we support and are flexible in their approach to work. They participate with enthusiasm in all aspects of the care and support they provide.

It’s essential that our staff get to know the Service User, what is important to them and how they want to be supported. Also it is essential t hat they communicate and give information in ways that the person can understand, so they can make their own choices and decisions.

Main D uties and Responsibilities - Supporting Service Users to :

1. In the home:
  • C arry out household tasks – cleaning, laundry, pet care and gardening
  • T ake pride in their personal appearance, dressing appropriately for the weather conditions
  • M aintain their home to the required standard including basic maintenance, decorating, repairs and home security.
  • M aintain appropriate and adequate stock of personal and household consumables, first aid kit and basic cooking ingredients.
2. Life Skills:
  • Go s hopping, menu planning, preparing and cooking meals, ensuring appropriate standards of health & safety and hygiene in the kitchen.
  • A t tend appointments e.g. doctors, bank
  • R eading, writing and dealing with letters , incoming and outgoing
  • M anag e their money including household skills, council tax and personal monies. Help may also be required to complete benefit documentation .
  • Obtain the necessary skills to manage their time
  • O btain the necessary skills in road safety and use of public transport
  • M aintain existing skills and develop new ones
3. Social Skills:
  • B uild relationships with neighbours and other Service Users.
  • K eep in contact with family and friends
  • M aintain existing skills and develop new ones
4 . When appropriate:
  • Look after their health and support with m edication.
  • With getting out of bed, supporting them to move about
  • With dressing and undressing, personal hygiene and bathing
  • Accompanying the service user on holidays and outings as and when required.
  • E ncourag ing and support ing the service user to try out new things
  • Achieving their ambitions as set out in their person-centred plans or support plans.
Main Duties and Responsibilities - General

  • Maintain the confidentiality of the Service User at all times and in accordance with TCP’s policy and procedure
  • Keep accurate records as required including routine completion of the Communication Book where there are a team of personal assistants.
  • Work as part of a team , support ing colleagues when necessary
  • Attend training as required, team meetings and supervisions.
  • Work with other professionals when necessary in order to fulfil the req uirements of the job
  • Perform all duties in accordance with TCP policies and procedures.
  • Speak up on behalf of the people you support to your manager.
  • Report any deficiencies of the service to the Manager
The scope of the job may be subject to review and change in consultation with the employee.

Job Specification

The skills and experience the Personal Assistant must have:Essential:
  • To be able to read and write in plain English and work with figures.
  • A willingness to undertake training and development.
  • To be able to travel to different locations if required.
  • To be able to work as part of a team
  • Has an awareness of basic health and safety
  • Able to work alone in the home of the people who are receiving support.
  • Experience of working with people with a learning disability.
  • Basic computer skills
  • Health and Social Care NVQ level 2 or equivalent
