Job Purpose:
To lead the selection, development and implementation of appropriate technology and
associated commercial relationships that will deliver the Home of the Future for British Gas.
Principal Accountabilities
Commercial/budgetary responsibility for the following:
Establishing the detailed BG-wide technology strategy, working with the Director of Technology Strategy, IS, and business units
Identifying key strategic suppliers, developing relationships, identifying and developing commercial relationships with them
Delivery of Ofgems £50m Low Carbon Networks project with CE-Electric over 3 years (this will include contracting with and managing delivery by our internal resource owners as well as very large and also small technology and manufacturing companies)
Management of an internal budget of >£400k
Developing equipment for consumer test
Day to day contract management with suppliers - both existing and new.
Commercial responsibility for major projects e.g. LCNF project and meter suppliers
Manage Innovation and Technologys face off to business units, including agreeing current and future requirements. Technical product specifications, compliance and safety testing, and general technology developments.
Manage technical due diligence exercises to support BGs investments in technology companies.
Nature & Scope:
The Head of Technology will be recognised outside of the British Gas as an industry expert and will have considerable input in to strategy. He/she must be capable of performing the most highly complex assignments, and of devising original technical solutions.
The Head of Technology will have significant operational responsibility, guided by the timely and efficient delivery of products/services. The role will monitor programmes of development and be characterised by compliance or ensuring regulatory or quality standards are met. He/she will be responsible for laying out a plan to deliver the annual strategic direction across multiple or diverse teams.
The Head of Technology is likely to have significant industry experience. He/she is responsible for the execution of significant and complex executive directives.
The role holder will translate vision in to processes. The Head of Technology has freedom in achieving end results. He/she will oversee multiple or large complex projects: although the problem is clear, the solution is not. The role holder will deliver business focused solutions to the business. He/she will face conflicting priorities and will provide strategic input
The Candidate
The successful candidate will be an experienced leader and manager with a strong background in either technology or utilities. They will possess the vision to take British Gas New Markets to apposition where it is the recognised leader in low Carbon markets in the UK
They will be an inspirational leader with a high level of intellect and emotional intelligence with the ability to play a leading role in a new business with the backing of Centrica plc.
Key responsibilities for the Head of Technology: LCNF delivery:
stakeholder management
LCNF stakeholders include BGX and business managers within British Gas the MD and senior team within CE-Electric and senior figures within Durham university and EA technology.
Our project is high profile within Ofgem (and possibly within DECC), and will feed directly into the development of business opportunity in the next round of the Distribution Price Control mechanism for electricity distribution in the UK - the regulatory team within British Gas and Centrica are both keen to support the projects success
Technology providers - our intention is that the project is seen as reference project within the UK and internationally as the energy industry develops commercial models for demand response and smart grid development. Significant technology providers such as Panasonic and GE are involved in delivery of the project and are interested in development of the same opportunities
DNOs and other energy suppliers (our competitors and potential competitors such as Distribution Service Organisations) will receive updates on our progress and will be invited to regular review forums
Local MPs in the region have been engaged and will continue to be interested in the teams success
Management of £7.5m budget and delivery of £20m worth of domestic renewable generation
Industry engagement on smart metering, smart grids in co-ordination with Centrica Energy and British Gas Regulatory teams (Tim Dewhurst, ) leverage of our learnings from LCNF and our position with technology providers thanks to Smart Metering to identify opportunities and develop our strategy in DR and Smart Grids
Internal presentation and review on our strategy and objectives with senior stakeholders, co-ordination of learnings and plans with Direct Energy
Engagement with and development of joint plans with technology partners such as Vodafone, L+G, GE, Trilliant
Establish strategy and manage business development in Demand Response, including co-ordination of plans and leverage of opportunity with CE and BGB
Strategy and business development in renewable gas; delivery of £50m investments against BGNM market goals
Capabilities:
Industry knowledge
thorough understanding of the UKs energy sector from an economic and regulatory perspective
which players have what role, how opportunities will develop as the industry changes through this decade
Technical knowledge
broad understanding of energy generation, transmission, storage, plus data and communication technologies
degree level qualification in electrical or other engineering discipline will be a significant advantage
Stakeholder management
this is a broad role requiring senior stakeholder engagement and management within Centrica and across partners, suppliers and regulatory bodies
delivery of the LCNF project in particular will require pro-active management of likely issues to ensure success
Strategy
the areas of demand response, renewable energy and smart grids will play a significant place in Centricas future in both the UK and North America
the role has significant strategic content, requiring the ability to understand complex commercial and technical issues and develop clear options or decisions
the role will require successful engagement with key though leaders both with Centrica and across the industry
an MBA and/or experience within an energy-centric consultancy will be a significant advantage
Delivery
this is a role with significant accountability for delivery of firm business goals under external scrutiny
budgetary responsibility is significant
experience of large scale project or operational management will be a significant advantage
Commercial
the role will require commercial negotiation and management of 3rd party delivery
the renewable gas role will require delivery of several multi-£m investments
Team management
the role will include management, development, recruitment and career planning of a group of technical specialists - c. 10 at present but likely to grow to around 20 with the development of the renewable gas and demand response business opportunities
This is an excellent opportunity to join British Gas as both British Gas New Markets grows rapidly and the broader business go through periods of change as the low Carbon economy comes to the fore. It is hoped that after a period of two to three years in this high profile post a successful individual will move on within Centrica to a bigger leadership role.
