Reporting to the Store Manager you will be responsible for serving customers, processing orders and re-stocking according to the store policy.

You will receive in store training and work towards achieving an BTEC Retail Knowledge & Skills qualification (this will also be through the training provider Academy of Music & Sound). You will learn to and complete the full range of skills in selling music instruments, books and accessories from greeting a customer; identifying their requirements; advising on the best product for their needs (including ordering any item out of stock); taking payment; issuing a receipt or invoice and packaging goods to take away or arranging delivery. In addition you will learn about and operate the store ICT and till systems including receiving stock from manufacturers/distributors, stock control and pricing. A focus of your role will be to ensure a high level of customer service.

You will work five days per week or 30hrs minimum with a day off in lieu for Saturdays and Sundays

Training

Training to be Provided

As an apprentice you will receive 'on the job' training from an in-store trainer. Also, you will receive mentoring and assessment from one of our regional mentor assessors. All of your 'off the job' training will be via our Academy of Music Moodle Virtual Learning Environment. On completing the first year a BTEC level 2 certificate in Retail Knowledge and a BTEC level 2 Certificate in Retail Skills will be achieved. In year two a BTEC level 3 Certificate in Retail Knowledge and BTEC level 3 Diploma in Retail Skills can be achieved.

Qualifications Required

Ideally you will have achieved a level 2 qualification such GCSE/Functional Skill grade E and above in English, Maths & ICT for an Intermediate Apprenticeship or Grade C or above for an Advance Apprenticeship.

Personal Qualities

Personable, good communicator, creative thinker, articulate, self motivated, but most of all, passionate about music and a willingness to succeed in a highly competitive industry. You must be reliable and a good timekeeper.

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.

The experience gained during your employment (and qualification/s achieved during the apprenticeship) could progress to either a higher-level apprenticeship for a further 12 months and/or full music instrument retail employment. Transferable skills could also help you work in other retail sectors.

Working in a music shop can also help greatly in working in other areas of the wider music industry. Music instrument shops can be a source of music industry contacts leading to other work such as live performance, recording, band management and instrument tuition.
