RBS Executive Search sits within the Group Talent division of RBS Group HR and delivers a high quality approach to the direct hiring of senior external talent and the deployment of senior internal talent for the RBS Group.

The function mirrors the activities of external search firms by adopting the same principles and methodologies to a search. However, the team is unique in that it is embedded within RBS and is the ‘go-to’ advisor on hiring requirements for approximately the top 300 executives across all divisions and functions with the Group, which employees approximately 130,000 worldwide. As such the team is exceptionally well positioned to take a holistic view on the requirement and solution for the Group’s senior hiring needs. The team’s track record spans executive and non-executive appointments across the Group including for UK Retail, Coutts, Markets & International Banking, and Ulster Bank, across a range of leadership roles within the front office and in functions including HR, Risk, Finance, and Marketing.

We are seeking an Executive Researcher for a fixed term contract of twelve months to cover a member of the team’s maternity leave. There may be the potential to extend beyond twelve months, or to seek other opportunities within the RBS Group at the end of the contract. This opportunity would provide an ideal base for someone looking to experience what it is like to work within a large, global corporate and to develop an intimate understanding of a sophisticated approach to talent management.

The role of an Executive Researcher is to lead the identification of, and to support the recruitment of, high calibre senior talent at Board and Executive level. Researchers’ have full accountability for the research phase and work with the team’s consultants during the search process to support the successful completion of assignments.

This position will be based in London.

The individual will have a track record of successfully leading research for a variety of senior level searches within a retained Executive Search firm. They should be adept at managing multiple projects and conflicting deadlines, have a thirst for knowledge and problem solving, be of strong intellect and have a high sense of integrity. They must have a clear written and verbal communication style and be resourceful, thoughtful and team oriented in approach.

Prior experience of working within the financial services sector is advantageous but not compulsory.

  • Gain a thorough understanding of each search requirement, identifying the key responsibilities of the role and characteristics of the ideal candidate, taking primary responsibility for writing the role specification.
  • Develop a clear, appropriate search strategy to ensure full understanding of the market and identify ideal target sectors and companies.
  • Conduct detailed and imaginative initial research, combining tenacious investigation with instinctive exploration.
  • Produce concise and well structured research reports to a high level of detail and accuracy, ensuring accurate tracking and cross referencing.
  • Develop and maintain a wide-ranging network of senior external sources, ensuring that identification and qualification of potential candidates is of the highest standard.
  • Identify, approach and qualify suitable candidates: engaging with confidence and complete discretion. Strike an appropriate balance between selling and assessing and demonstrate the maturity to form an initial appraisal of suitability.
  • Undertake follow up contact in a timely and direct manner, constantly employing practices which contribute to excellence in candidate care and the enhancement of the RBS employer brand.
  • Maintain a high level of background research activity by monitoring industry journals, the internal RBS website, and press and internet sources; as well as capturing market and people intelligence via internal sources across the RBS Group.
  • Enhance the team’s intellectual capital by recording information on the teams’ talent management database coherently and accurately.
  • Follow and maintain operating procedures which include relevant controls to meet Group and local policy requirements.
