JOB TITLE: Graduate/ Project Engineer/Scientist (6 month contract)
DISCIPLINE TEAM: Geology and Geotechnics
OFFICE LOCATION (S): Edinburgh
REPORTING TO: Principal
WORKING HOURS: 37.5hrs
SALARY: Negotiable plus benefits
SYNOPSI S:

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate (once suitably trained) will provide assistance to the Geology and Geotechnics group nationally in the following areas:
- Organising site investigation/laboratory testing services in advance of field works.
- Developing health and safety plans to cover identified work tasks.
- Supervision of drilling/investigation contractors on site.
- Taking and logging soil samples.
- Collecting soil and groundwater samples for analysis.
- Organising transport of samples to laboratory.
- Working with Project Managers to ensure suitable analytical testing regimes are undertaken.
- Assisting Project Managers with reporting tasks, including desk studies , data entry/assessment, borehole/trial pit log preparation, factual reporting (leading to interpretative reporting as experience grows).
- Proven Academic Achievement – the role requires the candidate to have successfully completed a first degree (as a minimum) in Geotechnical Engineering , Geology , Engineering Geology or Geo-environmental engineering and preferably a second degree in an engineering subject (or closely aligned).
- Previous Experience – no specific requirement for industrial experience is required, although some post grad experience would be beneficial. A desire to work in the geotechnical sector is essential .
- Flexibility – whilst based in Edinburgh , the work will be UK based and we therefore require the successful candidate to travel to wherever required for periods lasting from 1 day to a week or more. A full, clean driving licence is therefore a pre-requisite for the post.
- Technical Competence – following a period of training, the successful candidate will be expected to work both independently and as part of small, highly competent team whilst following strict technical and Health & Safety protocols. Within the office, the successful candidate would be expected to demonstrate a high degree of fluency with word processing and data management software.
- Proven Written and Verbal Communication Skills – the successful candidate will be expected to develop their written and verbal communication skills to a level where they can actively participate in the preparation of reports and to be able to communicate effectively with field and laboratory contractors.
