We are looking for a Publications Manager to join us initially on a 6 month fixed term contract integral to an exciting new product launch in the Bradford area.
The Publication Manager's roles and responsibilities can be broken down into three main components, Editing, Writing, and Community Engagement.
Editing
Magazines will most likely be 32 pages, cover to cover, and contain adverts and around 20 editorial items. It is the publication manager's responsibility to source non-advertising content for each edition, and to carry out the final proof read before publication. They will oversee the process and be able to view the progress of the editions within their control.
The publication manager will leverage all available assets as directed by the editorial department to efficiently and accurate process community submissions for inclusion into each magazine.
They will be expected to report on issues and status for each magazine for which they are responsible.
The publication manager is responsible for adhering to the production schedule of each newsletter for which they are responsible.
The publication manager will ultimately be responsibility for the overall quality for the magazines under their control.
Writing
Publication Managers will be expected to contribute original, written editorial content whereas to support each of their magazines to ensure both an informative and enriching experience for it's readers.
Publication Managers may be expected to take original photographs for inclusion in the magazines.
Based on a series of guidelines and templates, the publication manager will seek to achieve a given level of content with a minimum and maximum for any one edition, include any other mandatory items such as contact information, and source other locally provided news and information.
Photography
The publication manager also will be responsible for the photographs in the magazines, from cover images to photos and illustrations that will be used in the magazines. All images must be either shot by the publication manager or obtained with the permission of the photographer who took them (the photographers will earn photo credits with each photo that runs in the magazines. Stock images also are acceptable, provided that they are fee-free images. Publication managers also must ensure that the photos and images to be used conform to the standards for optimal reproduction.
Community Engagement
The publication manager is responsible for making connections in assigned communities for the purpose of collecting hyper-local news and information and creating/collecting and maintaining a library of "editorial" content to ensure enough content for each monthly edition.
The publication manager will, at any one time, have a number of editions to produce, covering from approximately 10 to up to 25 communities per month. They will typically have 2-3 months to build up a network of local contributors before the publishing deadline of the first edition of a given magazine. Thereafter editions will be published on a monthly basis.
Essential Skills Required
- Srong background in writing and editing content
- Experience engaging with local communities - interviewing and gathering content
- Photography skills - both taking and sourcing images
- You must have and be happy to use your own equipment to carry out this role. The very basics would include camera, PC and printing equipment.
