About the GEM Practice
McKinsey’s Global Energy Materials (GEM) Practice serves the top shapers in the global Oil & Gas and Metals & Mining industries. In nearly 1,500 engagements over the last five years, we have worked with eight of the top 10 players in the United States and Canada, and nine of the top 10 players in Europe, as well as several of the largest national Oil & Gas and Metals & Mining companies in Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia.

We serve clients in all aspects of the industry, from upstream activities such as exploration, drilling, production and services, through transportation and refining, to wholesale and retail marketing.

The Role
Associates are key members of the teams working with our clients on their most important issues. Our projects cover a wide range of topics, from strategy to operations. The GEM practice associates will predominantly focus on engagements in Oil & Gas and Metals & Mining. In a typical engagement, an associate owns a workstream to deliver the end recommendation with help from the McKinsey leadership.

Typical activities of an associate involve:
Performing analysis of the particular problems as defined for the workstream – identifying and prioritising issues for further analysis, and synthesizing the insights from the analyses
Developing recommendations based on the synthesis, and create plans to implement the recommendation
The Associate can be based in any of Sydney, Melbourne or Perth and should be aware that a good deal of the work-week will be spent travelling to and working on client-sites.

Requirements A minimum of four years (to a maximum of ten years) of highly relevant experience in the Oil & Gas or Metals & Mining industries, preferably including one to three years in a leadership role within the business
Strong quantitative, analytical and conceptual problem-solving skills combined with outstanding business acumen
Proven ability to lead teams, motivate others, communicate complex ideas clearly, gain the respect of clients and colleagues, and work collaboratively
Education
We seek candidates with distinctive records of academic achievement with the following profiles: An undergraduate degree in an analytical curriculum, e.g. engineering, geology, science (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics), business, economics and law
