ROLE:
The work will involve supporting Prison Officers or the operational line dealing with members of the public, visitors to the establishment and prisoners through a variety of tasks. HMP Doncaster works to ensure that those committed to serve prison sentences by the Courts are held securely and safely and are encouraged to address their offending behaviour in preparation for release into the community.

You will be required to work in a number of areas within the establishment which will require you to work within a team and at times on your own.

You may be required to escort contractors, visitors and vehicles and carry out general clerical duties.

To report to Unit Manager any issues that would undermine security and the safe environment for staff and prisoners.

Gatehouse

The Operational Support is the first, and possibly the only, contact the public may have in the prison. The Operational Support has a dual role in that they have both a Security and Public relations related task to carry out, ensuring that only authorised Staff, personnel and visitors are allowed entry and egress from the establishment.

They must ensure that all processing, entry and egress procedures are maintained at the highest standards and to this end; they must fully understand and be able to manipulate all technologies at their disposal.

Communications Room

To receive, evaluate and report information and indications of events to your Supervisor and authorise movement of prisoners, staff, contractors and visitors. React to initial responses of events and emergencies. Operate the radio safety net and maintain safe and secure practices and efficient operating procedures.

Liaise with the Gate/Comms Supervisor, with regard to any special instructions for the day ahead, i.e. expected visitors etc.

Be aware of the current situation in all parts of the prison in order to aid decisions on routine movements and events, and to respond appropriately to emergency situations.

Organise and control via the net the initial response to emergency incidents e.g. in response to an alarm bell or radio alert. Ensure that all incident & occurrence logs are maintained and retained.

Ensure that any equipment at your detailed work position/post is in good working order, and that any required test checks are completed, (metal detectors, etc). All faults must be reported to the immediately Gate/Comms Supervisor.

The Gate building is the only break in the physical perimeter of the establishment, through the vehicle lock and pedestrian entrance/exit. This makes it the most vulnerable point for prisoners to escape through. All procedures for issuing keys and identifying people on entry too and egress from the establishment must be strictly adhered too.

No unauthorised person passes in or out of the establishment.

That ALL persons wishing to enter the Prison, who do not possess Prison Service, Home Office or Serco Home Affairs identification, are video imaged & Finger Biometric. Once this as been completed the visitor will be issued with a temporary visitors pass. Visitors return these passes on leaving the establishment.

They record all movement through the Gate of visitors and key prison personnel in the Gatekeepers` Occurrence Book, F315.

They must seek proof of identity or recognition of people before allowing entry to/or exit from the establishment by following the laid down gate procedures. (Checking duplicate photo identification card, any unusual bags or items, prior to opening sliding door, P1).

ALL Key holding staff must display their Key Chain before being allowed through the pedestrian lock.

Entry to the main gatehouse is restricted to gatehouse staff, Directors, Sierra and Oscar one, Duty managers and those listed in Directors Rules.

All visitors for potential Cat -A" prisoners are brought to the attention of the Gate/Comms Supervisor, and their identities verified using the Approved visitor lists, before allowing them to pass to the visitors` entrance.

They have a full working knowledge of the Gatehouse, including the electronic working of the gate mechanisms, and manual operation in the event of electrical failure.

They assist the Gate/Comms Supervisor in maintaining an accurate roll of the Prison and keep updated the roll board, Prison state board, Location of potential Cat -A" and -E" List prisoners, and temporary release, absconded details, Current Hospital Escorts & any Bedwatch.

They assist in escorting vehicles and workmen within the prison complex, being responsible for, as required the vehicles, tools and personal safety and reporting any problems or deficiencies immediately to the Gate/Comms Supervisor. (Only on request by Security Manager)

They will search people entering / leaving the establishment on an ad hoc basis as directed by the Security Manager / Gate/Comms Supervisor.

ALL None Security Keys that are stored in the Gate area (i.e. Cuffs Keys, Reception & Visits centre) will be issued using the key issue book

UHF Radio`s will be booked out to individual staff members using the Radio issue tally system.

Operational Supports should be aware of all security measures in place within the Gatehouse and Prison as a whole, noting and bringing to the attention of the

Gate/Comms Supervisor any discrepancies or practices by visitors or staff, which may affect such security measures.

Carry out perimeter checks internal/external, in line with the local security strategy and when directed by the Security Manager & Gate/Comms Supervisor, and using the correct personal protection equipment.

All staff must constantly be aware and be alert to the -STATE OF ALERT" and -THREAT" to HMP & YOI Doncaster.

To carry out any other duties as directed by the Department Manager

To carry out Monitoring of prisoner calls AD HOC on a daily basis.

To search all vehicles entering and leaving the establishment. Search Drivers and Escorts AD HOC on entering the establishment.

Put all ACCT`S on to lids and issue new log numbers.
