Background

The Estates team is responsible for the repair and maintenance of the estate buildings and grounds which comprise office and residential accommodation and various training buildings. We are looking for a Handyperson to join our team based at the Scottish Fire Services College, Gullane.

The Job

This is a busy post which covers a wide range of duties throughout the estate: minor repairs, maintenance and improvement works, identifying and reporting estate defects , checking smoke generators, operating controls in Real Fire Training Facility, maintenance on the compressor, testing air quality, checking LPG tanks, moving scrap cars/equipment using forklift truck, assisting the College Engineer and IT Manager, mot testing/collection of spares/fuelling vehicles, projector maintenance/PA system for Graduation and charity dinners/moving IT equipment, setting up classrooms/meeting rooms, moving furniture and driving duties.

Qualifications & Experience

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate good team working skills and ability to be flexible. Customer care skills and full, valid UK driving licence are also essential. It is desirable that candidate demonstrates awareness of Health and Safety in the workplace, Large Goods Vehicle licence and awareness of building construction and building services.

This is a permanent and pensionable appointment. You will be expected to remain in post until the Scottish Fire Services College is transferred to the new employer (the newly formed single Scottish Fire and Rescue Service - estimated to be April 2013) at which point the post will be included on the new structure. Existing SG employees will transfer to the Fire Service on TUPE.

New entrants will normally start on the minimum of the pay range. Candidates with a disability who meet the minimum criteria for the appointment will be invited to interview.
