Head of Development and Architecture

The Head of Development and Architecture is responsible for the technical and solutions architectural governance and controls of BMI’s main online and content management platforms. He/she would ensure that we’re maximising the interoperability and cost effectiveness of those environments. You would be responsible for appropriately documenting our current environments. You would then work with hosting and development partners to evolve them towards a world-class business information production and online client engagement platform
Develop and maintain a strategic systems and content architecture for BMI covering the entire value chain from content production through to presentation to customers.
Lead the in-house BMI development team and provide technical and architectural governance of third party development partners. (Note: vendor relationship to remain within PMO)
Develop and maintain a consistent and detailed set of architectural documentation on existing Business Monitor Online (BMO) and CMS production environments and any new strategic platforms.
Provide a detailed tactical road-map for the decoupling of the current BMO environment into discrete platforms linked by web services.
Work with Rackspace, Evozon, Datamatics and other external partners to ensure that all production and development systems are efficiently architected.
Ensure all BMI strategic platforms are architected to ensure delivery against agreed performance, availability and disaster-recovery standards.
Work with business stakeholders to define and implement an end-to-end content architecture for BMI and ensure buy-in.
Review the coding quality and standards used internally and by our partners to ensure they adhere to best practice and industry standards
Providing thought leadership on the “art of the possible” within the online technology space that can help drive future evolution of BMI products
Conduct research on software and hardware products to justify recommendations and to support purchasing efforts.
Perform cost-benefit and return on investment analyses for proposed solutions to aid management in making implementation decisions.
Relationships and Communications: build effective relationships both within and outside of the IT team and department
Required Skills
Desired Skills & Experience
A highly technical individual with a clear pedigree of end to end architecture definition, delivery and ownership in the online arena.
Experience of managing in-house, offshore and outsourced development teams.
Deep knowledge of information architecture, content management, web development and online content delivery.
Deep knowledge of open source platforms including LAMP, Drupal, Liferay and Alfresco is critical.
Proven ability to translate business requirements into a comprehensive systems, information and data architecture and to make that architecture a reality
Broad knowledge of a variety of programming languages such as Java, Perl and PHP
Detailed orientated with an ability to evangelise technology opportunities to non-technical audience.
Deep experience of working in information-intensive online B2B or B2C organizations.
Broad knowledge of IT, development and architectural best practice such as ITIL, TOGAF, Agile etc.
Proven track record of issue and risk management and the ability to identify resolutions rapidly and effectively
Ability in deciding where ‘quick wins’ are suitable
Confident and effective client and internal communication skills
Ability to work well under pressure
Proven track record of effective time management
Excellent written communication, attention to detail and diplomacy
Experience in Change Management
Demonstrate problem analysis and resolution skills
