Brief Description
Building and Civils is an asset within the Infrastructure Investments function and is made up of the Estates and Civils groups.
Network Rail is one of the largest property owners in the country and a substantial landowner. The Estates group manages the portfolio for the Company. This comprises 9,000 managed properties ranging from heritage buildings to modern developments, from stations such as architecturally acclaimed London Waterloo and award-winning Manchester Piccadilly to retail complexes, telecoms sites and engineering depots.
The Civils group manages all activities associated with the maintenance and renewal of Network Rail owned structures and earthworks. It is the largest civil engineering asset base in the UK and consists of 40000 bridges, 750 tunnels, 13000 miles of embankment/cutting, The scope of the works in the Civils area include examinations, assessments, detailed designs and the implementation of projects, ranging in value from £10k to £35m. About the role (External)
This role supports the Senior Asset Engineer (Geotechnics) in the management of the Wales Route earthworks assets. This includes the evaluation of examinations, identifying renewals and maintenance works and dealing with day to day issues. The job will involve travelling around the route, visiting sites and working trackside.
Key Accountabilities
- Lead the requirements for examination and undertake evaluation, assessment and risk management of geotechnical assets. Manage compliance of examination and evaluation of geotechnical assets against requirements of standards.
- Provide engineering input to the standards and specifications for earthworks examinations and assessments.
- Maintain comprehensive and accurate asset records.
- Direct the implementation of monitoring systems and undertake the review of monitoring results and other control measures.
- Support the development of route specific plans including all maintenance and renewal activities and asset strategies, providing the prioritised investment work bank. Support the inclusion of all investment items into appropriate programmes and track through to completion including approval of programme changes.
- Provide support to the production and prioritisation of the route business plan. Support the Senior Earthworks and Drainage Management Engineer in producing remits for investment schemes.
- Monitor trends arising from examinations and evaluations, assessments, asset capability and failure precursors and confirm that action is specified and taken and participate in investigations of incidents.
- Liaise with community relations to support the resolution of geotechnical and drainage issues impacting on neighbours and third parties.
- Provide engineering input to the specification and management of geotechnical and drainage examination contracts. Investigate and resolve technical and quality issues with suppliers.

Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Civil or Structural Engineering or equivalent geotechnical qualification.
- Substantial experience of geotechnical asset examination and assessment
- An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques
- Awareness of Construction Design and Management Regulations
- Working towards membership of a relevant professional institution
Desirable
- Degree in a relevant subject
- Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer
- Member of a relevant professional institution
