The successful candidate will be a key player in a growing team in Cardiff which will provide them with a great opportunity to develop their technical and project management skills whilst delivering a wide portfolio of interesting commissions from feasibility, project appraisal and concept design through to detailed design and construction supervision. Typical projects recently undertaken include flood risk management schemes (rivers and estuaries), flood consequences assessments and fish pass design.
You will be joining the UK ’s top consultant for flood and coastal erosion risk management (according to the New Civil Engineer’s 2012 Consultants’ File) and the largest provider of water related projects to clients including the Environment Agency Wales, Local Authorities and developers. We will provide you with the skills and foundation you need to develop a successful and satisfying career in the water and flood risk management industry. Key Objectives
The principal function of this position is to:
Undertake a variety of engineering tasks and take an active role within the integrated multidisciplinary teams in the delivery of engineering solutions, investigations and designs across a range of projects.
Provide technical engineering input and possibly some mentoring to junior graduates as well as elements of project management support to project teams. Key Responsibilities
The priorities of this role include:
- water engineering design commissions
- design input on appraisal, detailed design and construction stage schemes
- investigation of engineering problems and undertaking calculations to provide solutions
- identification and development of outline solutions to identified problems/needs assistance in the preparation of investigative and developed solution reports and contract specifications
- management of packages of work within budget and programme
- provision of some inputs for bid preparation Job Requirements
The ideal candidate should possess and be able to demonstrate the following skills and knowledge. These points should align with the key areas of responsibility:
a desire to develop and become a chartered engineer
an understanding of the UK water industry (specifically in the areas of river engineering and flood risk management)
knowledge of river engineering and catchment processes (including experience of design of flood defence walls and embankments, coastal erosion, fish pass design including the capability to design to Eurocodes)
be developing sound hydraulic and engineering aptitude and ability
independent thinking and problem solving skills
a knowledge of CDM and an appreciation of sustainability and environmentally sound solutions
good written and verbal communication skills
track record in delivery to Environment Agency
flexibility as a team player, being able to work with different skill groups in the office and across other locations
willingness to travel to meet the needs of specific projects
degree in Civil Engineering or other relevant engineering discipline
working towards chartered professional review
