Great place to work
Senior Project Engineer (Current Employee), Melville, NY – May 2, 2013
Friendly co-worker with interesting and challenging projects if you want them. Growth within the company can be challenging after spending many years in one area.

Productive work place, strong values of consumer protection
Microbiology Lab Associate II (Former Employee), Canton, MA – May 1, 2013
Pros: strong company values
Cons: values strong in theory, weak in practice.
Typical day of work consisted of running USP compendial methods. Strong drive towards teamwork, although enough coworkers decided that teamwork was not for them to have a significant kink in "teamwork". The most enjoyable part about this job was the satisfaction that I was doing work to help protect consumers from faulty products.

Ruined by corporate politics
Senior Alarm System Auditor (Former Employee), Santa Clara, CA – January 6, 2013
Pros: pay, benefits
Cons: incompetent managers, dog eat dog work environment
Terrible workplace. Fostered bad qualities in employees by outrageous system of ranking. Mangers were complete incompetents. Most had no managerial background or training.

U.L. is one of the best places to learn about electricity and the systems that it runs on. I have enjoyed these past five years.

Excellent Corporation with professional congenial staff!
Staff Accountant - Contract (Former Employee), Northbrook, IL – May 8, 2012
Pros: emplyees made a productive, fun atmosphere.
Cons: poor response from technical support area.
A typical day at work:
The majority of my time was spent digging through and researching past undocumented reconciliation variances, identifying specific discrepancies within lockbox deposits containing vast quantities of checks, working with Oracle ledger reporting and communicating with Cash Application area to resolve errors.

What you learned:
Increased – more... proficiency using the various capabilities of Oracle, such as the the accounts receivable, payable and ledger system areas inquiries and report generation.

Management:
Management allowed a great deal of independence in completing daily responsibilities, however on occasion were also inaccessible due to demands for their time.

Your Co-Workers:
I thoroughly enjoyed the attitude and dedication that my co-workers displayed. I was surrounded by a welcoming and positive group of individuals that created a warm yet business-like atmosphere. I immediately felt part of the team.

The hardest part of the job:
The individuals that had once handled this reconciliation were no longer employed with UL. There were no written procedures or individuals with adequate knowledge of the Lockbox Account.

Additionally, it was virtually impossible to gain access to various public drives that contained files necessary to complete my job. Although management was supportive of my numerous requests, the technical area only provided a work-around/indirect link that was limiting.

The most enjoyable part of the job:
I enjoy working on reconciliations in particular, but I have to say my co-workers were the most enjoyable part of my experience at Underwriters Laboratories. We certainly worked very hard, but my co-workers still maintained their rapport of humor and dedication. – less

Great company
Field Inspector 1 (Former Employee), Birmingham, AL – October 26, 2011
Pros: flexible hours
Cons: gas prices
Excellent company, great job for self starter, prior manangement was at times overly strict, but understand things have changed. Economy killed this job for me due to high gas cost and maintenece on vehicle. Overall a fun job, where you learn alot of different things, while meeting some great people.
