The worst company ever
Travel Money Advisor (Former Employee), West Midlands – May 12, 2013
Pros: virtually none
Cons: poor money, bad management, bad conditions, little prospect of progression, dealing with many complaints, taking the blame for a badly run company
The organisation of this company is nothing short of a disgrace. The salary is only a few pence above minimum wage, which is unbelievable given the amount of responsibility and rubbish staff are expected to put up with.

The aim of this company is to sell travel money, and also to sell their 'products', which are either currency cards or travellers – more... cheques. Currency cards are of no practical benefit to the customer, as exchange rates are better abroad if you take you debit card, and if you bring your card home with any amount of cash left on it the buy back rate rips you off royally. Staff are expected to sell these to customers, as I was, and I was twice given a disciplinary because customer's had complained that they had lost money. I was only doing what I had been told!

The management here are awful (I worked in the west Midlands region) and they take great satisfaction from bullying their staff. One team leader, I recall, had her staff asking customers for a reason why they did not want to buy a currency card and then noting it down in a 'red' book. Customer service, really?

Unless you are desperate (destitute even), avoid this joke of a company like the plague. – less

Not enough pay for the rubbish you have to deal with
Travel Money ADvisor (Current Employee), Berkshire – April 23, 2013
Pros: nothing
Cons: long hours and disgraceful pay.
typical day at work includes receiving ridiculous emails about what your targets are and how much they want you to 'sell sell sell' it gets very disheartening and they expect you to be totally obsessed with money. That is all they care about. They don't care about staff and the communication is absolutely pathetic, no one contacts you if there are any – more... problems that you might have to face with customers. You have to deal with every customer complaint and other front of house problems which causes a lot of stress and you're getting paid peanuts for it. Total lack of respect in this job. Managers will take sides with customers if you get a complaint about anything. You are cooped up in a box with no fresh air for 9 hours a day and absolutely no one to talk to. Awful job that will suck the life out of you. Don't expect to make any plans as they do their rota a month in advance!!!! – less

do not work here!
sales advisor (Former Employee), Scotland – April 15, 2013
Pros: absolutely nothing
Cons: everything! money, management, conditions etc.
Absolutely terrible company to work for. 8 and a half hour day with a half hour break. No support. Supermarket uniform. One manager will tell you one thing, other tells you something else. No support from teamleaders. Cold conditions however not allowed fleece etc. On top of this, travelex is a severely boring isolated job. You will rarely get a customer. – more... Lucky to get one for hours at a time, money is not worth working for them as pay is not great at all.

Overall, everything about them as a company is terrible. Also, you just hide away in a box all day waiting for a customer with a camera watching you. Wish I left ages ago.

Only giving this company one star as this site makes me click at least one star to write this review. – less

Do not work for them
team leader (Former Employee), south – February 27, 2013
Cons: everything
Management system is shocking. Little or no support when needed. long hours for not a lot of money. Total lack of respect amongst staff and they do not look after you well that is unless you have a union rep you use at every opportunity!!! I learnt a lot but mainly self taught and the job expectations are way over the top for the poor pay you get.

When i was working here every day would be the same thing but you never knew how it would end. Everyday I would take the money that we recieved from tompson fly and count it making sure it was the right amount to be recieved. while working at Travelex I learnt about different currencys such as dollars, euro's etc.. , my co workers were very friendy – more... and would help when ever i got stuck , overal this was a good good and I found it good work experience. – less

A pleasant workplace
cashier (Former Employee), Frimley – January 3, 2013
Pros: flexible working hours
Cons: long hours
I was trained in different areas of the business, so it was either making the money orders up, or making sure the orders went to the right depots. There were early and later shifts, depending on what area I worked in.
I learned many different currencies and rates.
The management were always there to help.
Co-workers were also very helpful. It was a – more... very happy atmosphere.
The hardest part of the job was meeting high deadlines, but that was also the most enjoyable part of the job, when you could be satisfied that you worked together and met these, – less

Could be better...
Bureau Manager (Current Employee), Scotland – September 6, 2012
A typical day at work is opening the bureau , ordering currency needed weekly paperwork check checking stock matches up dealing with staffing issues and organising the rota .
I have learned a lot. I can now employ staff train new recruits and can reach targets and meet incentives for myself and the team .
Management is very very poor not enough support – more... thrown into things a lot with no help. Managers turn phones off on you when you need help . I have had managers offer benefits to certain staff members and not others . Managers only visit stores once ever 6 months which is very poor .

Hardest part of the job is keeping staff motivated when they are not getting their wages through by head managers through lack of support and communication on their part.

Most enjoyable part of job is interacting with customers and doing the best we can every single team - finding out their travel plans and offering the best product for them. – less

Fast Paced Work Environment (Supermarket)
Travel Money Advisor (Current Employee), Tesco, North West England – August 31, 2012
Pros: respected & rewarded
Cons: quiet at times
Work at Travelex Tesco, branded as Tesco Bank Travel Money meaning a Tesco uniform is provided and not the Travelex uniform. The day to day role requires an 08:30am start on the early shift and the latest finishing at 9pm. Any shift within the business opening hours requires all staff members to check currencies in stock, prepare customer orders, serve – more... customers, maximise on sales, sell the pre paid Cash Passport/travellers cheques and also promote travel money throughout the year within the store by doing regular tannoy announcements and leafleting. Within the supermarket bureaux the majority of time is spent on your own as most bureaux are single pods. Per bureau you will find 3-4 staff with one of them a Team Leader, all of which work on a rota basis to cover the opening times. Travelex is a great company to work in terms of benefits such as discounts literally from 100's if not 1000's of retails such as Comet, Asda, Sainsbury's & Amazon. Not only that but the quarterly bonuses are quite good too. Management within Travelex are very friendly, always on the other end of the phone if assistance is needed and who are regular visitors to the bureaux so you get to know them personally. The only downside is that travel is not very constant, in winter you could only served 10 customers in a 4hour shift compared to the summer where you could serve 30+. – less

While doing the job its also about having fun at work environment.

I wish if there is any chance of extending my visa and would love to work – more... this company in the future. – less

Professional environment
Sales Consultant (Former Employee), Auckland international airport – March 13, 2013
Pros: discounted parking, monthly bonuses, competitive incentives
Cons: 12hour shifts, mostly casual positions.
At Travelex a normal day you are required to meet daily company targets, Sell Travelex products and up/sell in every transaction you process. As a sales consultant you are subject to all customers from all walks of life from all cultures so adjusting your sales pitch to match a customer is key.

I have gained a lot of useful skills from being employed – more... with Travelex such as Banking, Cash handling, effective problem solving, customer facing and up-selling skills. I enjoyed receiving monthly cash bonuses that were awarded to employees that achieved their targets and this would be placed together with your pay.

However when it came to management I can say that they were persistant as ever hassling employees to make product sales, asking consultants for their sales figures every hour, observing and putting consultants under pressure by constant assessments. I felt most days if I didn't make my daily targets I could be made unemployed because the pressure was so intense. I can also say apart from the pressure endured through the 1 year and 5 months that I was employed at Travelex the staff are very good they are supportive if a new employee needs help. If you enjoy a new challenge then maybe give Travelex a try but as for me it wasn't a environment for which I could grow internally. – less

Worse job I have ever had
Manager (Former Employee), Dublin, CA – January 5, 2013
Pros: decent pay, at first
Cons: zero appreciation, and no support from hr
Complete lack of leadership at the senior level, zero work/life balance, and impossible expectations. Hard work is not rewarded, and management will steal ideas of employees, and present them as their own. Senior management will also take credit for cost saving ideas, which were driven by subordinates.

Expect to be treated like an adult.
Sales Consultant (Former Employee), Jamaica, NY – July 13, 2012
Pros: lots of independence.
Cons: there are many shifts that end well into the night.
A typical day at Travelex would be seeing your foreign and domestic cash balances and making note of whats available to be sold. You learn how to find nuanced ways of upselling and that even small sales can become huge if you educate the customer properly. Expect to be given lots of independence branches don't have a supervisor there 24/7 but rather – more... your expected to drive results through sales performance. Hardest part of the job would be being able to keep busy during the slow times without any foot traffic, and the most enjoyable would be all the different kinds of people you'll meet by working at the airport. – less

Some locations are very busy due to customer volume, but other locations are also slow due to lack of customers. Management is nice and helpful. Overall, the environment is chaotic.
