The Salvation Army
Volunteer (Current Employee), Stockton-on-Tees, ENG – June 14, 2013
Pros: they care about your needs
Cons: lack of bus fair
The work at The Salvation Army is challenging and fast paced so it always keeps you busy and theres always more work to do so you are never left with nothing to do.

The co-workers are helpful, reliable and easy to work in a team with which is required within the environment because the jobs cannot be done without the effort of every co-worker.

The – more... management of the company is excellent as we are always given opportunities to work hard and efficiently and to try out new tasks, the environment is exceedingly fast paced and organized to meet the rota at the end of each day.

I have learned how to tag clothes successfully by understanding the order in which tasks needs to be done such as coding them correctly and neatly. how to take care of the merchandises properly making sure they are in best condition and are in the correct position of the store once its time for the stock to be put out. This I found to be the hardest task of the job because you need to understand the correct codings for each item and making sure the stock is in the right place in the store. The clothing also needs to look colorful and attractive for the customers so we color block the merchandise by putting colorful stock to the front.

I have also gained confidence by working with customers and working closely with co-workers which busted my esteem and made me manage to work faster and hard working while gaining new experiences and skills development.

I found everything about volunteering enjoyable as there was never a dull moment I was always kept busy and achieved my goals for the day of successfully helping my co-workers gain the rota for the day. – less

Introduction to a retail work environment
Sales Assistant (Former Employee), Beeston – June 14, 2013
Pros: flexible timings, breaks
Cons: lack of opportunity
Working at the Salvation Army has given me good initial experience working with customers. A typical working day involved managing the stock and helping with customer purchases. I have learnt how to use a till, correct procedures in a transaction, and the processing stock from donation to sale. My co-workers were very friendly as expected in a small – more... force, and were very encouraging and helpful. The hardest part of working at the salvation Army was when customers made demands. However I was able to resolve issues with the help of my co-workers. The most enjoyable part of the job was providing a service for the customers and seeing the results. – less

Co workers were fantastic
Hardest part of the job was not getting enough time for myself due to the nature of the establishment

International organisation in state of flux
Principal Project Worker (Current Employee), Westminster, ENG – June 1, 2013
Pros: location, level of responsibility. sense of being able to make a difference to people - staff and residents.
Cons: i work extremely long hours but that is partly due to my own nature.
As per my CV I am part of the management team for a 108 bed hostel for former rough sleepers, in Westminster London.
I manage the substance misuse team (frequently dealing with dual diagnosis cases) and am on-call duty manager c. one week per month.

I supervise staff, review income, support residents into ETE or to generally recover from multiple physical – more... and psychological issues.
I review support plans, risk assessments and new referrals and also take some responsibility for facilities management.

Certain staff are somewhat demotivated as the organisation is undergoing a restructuring process and people are having to re-apply for their jobs and the roles are changing.

The hardest part of my job is balancing the need to support and develop staff whilst challenging poor performance and driving ups standards.

The best part of the job is working with people - and trying to help them achieve their goals and aspirations and ultimately prepare them for the transition to independent living. – less

Fun and good with gaining more experience and learning new skills
Volunteer (Current Employee), hanley – May 29, 2013
Pros: making customers happy
Cons: sometimes having to deal with shoplifters
This job requires satisfying customers on a daily basis and helping those who have no help from anyone else. There is more to learn than just keeping a tidy and safe environment, customer satisfactory is number one, since the customers make the business successful. Also there is till checking, learning to fill out the paperwork when needed, filling – more... shelves, etc. The management is beyond easy to explain, it takes alot of work and dedication from co-workers, who are understanding and helpful to the customers and its their wonderful ability to leave the customers happy to buy their and keep them coming back. The deputy manager is incredible at her job, as is the area manager, who is nice and easy to talk to, as well as being easy-going and very polite to everyone. The hardest part of the job is dealing with shoplifters, we always have to keep an eye out, and also inform other shops if needed to to prevent them from also being stolen from. The best part of the job is seeing the happy looks on the customers faces when they leave the shop because they have been treated with a warm - welcome. – less

My Tasks
Cleaning Co-ordinator (Former Employee), Hope House, Glasgow – May 14, 2013
This was a satisfying job. I was responsible for overseeing the cleaning team within the Lifehouse as the hostels are now called.
Daily we cleaned the rooms as resident/clients left the unit.
At its peak we catered for 90 client -service users.

As well as the rooms duties involved cleaning all communal service areas staircases bathrooms and toilets – more... and offices. Laundry was rotated weekly and as a cleaning team we all participated in all areas,
covering when someone was off or on holiday

Buffing, cleaning, laundry was all undertaken.
We had training in Fire Safety, COSSH and First Aid amongst other inhouse training relevant to our duties.

Overall the staff gelled as a team and it was a happy place to work in. – less

I really loved working for The Salvation Army as I was doing different things every day and no two days were the same. My co-workers were all lovely and I found it easy to get on with everyone. The hardest part of the day was the quiet period as there were a lot of staff. I loved meeting all different varieties of people.
